  • Anyone running Koni Shocks

Am considering a Koni Lift kit now instead of the tough dogs after a few poor review by a number of owners. I know Koni are bit $$$ but supposedly they are very well rated but i stuggle to find much about them from other 4wd users.

Am considering the 88 series for the front, and the kit has 82 series on the back.

Are the 82 series suitable, or should i consider the 88 and 90 series offer over the 82s on the back?

The prado (150) won't have any drawers on the back or any heavy loads.

Would be nice to hear others owners thoughts on what they are running.

Don't know about Koni's but I have OME and love them. Excellent ride off road and very comfortable on road , not 'hard' ride at all. Would buy them again

I have used Koni on my previous Prado and was very happy with them, also my 4wd service centre in Melbourne recommend Koni and fit them to Prado's / LC200 etc and only hear good reports. I did have OME fitted way back in 2002 they were pretty good but faded much faster when doing desert sand hills / corrugations - of course I'm sure they have improved since then. For my current car I'm thinking Koni with RAIDS on rear or maybe a set of Bilstein's .... Can't make my mind up.

I'm running konis and have done on a few different vehicles. I have tried other brands, OME, Tough Dog, as well as a few others and none in my opinion for around $200-$250 bucks per shock come even close to the konis. I did have a set of Bilsteins on a Pathfinder a few years back and was impressed with them too but didn't have the car long enough to form a real opinion. With shocks, probably the hardest working part on our trucks, you certainly get what you pay for.

Pugaree, What konis series do you recommend or are they much a muchness...
I know Koni don't advise 82 series for lifted 4wds and won't warrant them, so for me i'm thinking 88 on the front but the rear i'm still undecided.

We have Koni's on the rear. They were already on it when we bought it though as the car was used for towing.

Yep, love the Koni raids. Ran them on my old 90 and had em on the 150 since new.

I had Raids on the rear and 88's from memory on the front of my 120. Expensive, but great shocks. When we did the Canning, my Konis were the coolest to touch after a stint of corrugations of any of the vehicles in our group. And they are rebuildable. The only reason I have OME's on the 150 are that ARB were the only company that would put in writing that their suspension would not adversely affect the VSC.

Bite the bullet and have ordered:

                    Front
                    Koni Raid 88
                    Dobinson C59-352

                    Rear
                    Koni 82 shocks
                    Dobinson C59-325

Now just to free up some time to be able to install them.

Sorry, only just saw your question to me above. What you have ordered is what I have except with King Springs. Let us know how you go.

Reviving an old thread after reading the thread where Koni's aren't suitable for a lift. Anyone actually damaged theirs?

I must admit I haven't done much off roading in mine so probably haven't tested the limits but am a little concerned.

                            Hey,

Keep your lift on the RAIDS around 25mm and you'll be fine. At that height you'll have around 65-70mm of droop on the front 88-1712 struts, and around 80mm on the rear with the 90-5404.

Any higher and yes you will eventually damage and destroy them from top outs, check in with Sunny, he'll give you more details on what happened to his struts.

Toperformance have also changed their maximum lift figures for the RAIDS, they have been reduced from 40mm to 30mm lift maximum.

Short travel struts and shocks will get beaten to death from top outs. I've seen every brand of short travel shocks busted, bent and broken with bits floating around the inside.

You'll still get everywhere you need with a 1" lift and the Konis will then last you the lifetime of your Prado!

Thanks Mark, appreciate your advice. A little more info on my setup and a question if I may. .

I am currently running Koni Raids K-88-1712 and KTFR 101HT coil on the front and the rears are K82-2386SP1 with KTPR 102 coil. I also have airbags in the rear which I keep a 5lb, haven't the need to pump them up any further yet. I'd like to retain the coils and change to Bilstein shocks/struts. Comfort is the big factor for me, car is generally unloaded, what would you recommend?

I have spent the last few hours going through the suspension database and the Bilstein threads, an amazing amount of knowledge in there and I thank you for taking the time to share but I'm still a little hesitant to make a decision on my own.

If it turns out that this the wrong setup, I will be pretty disappointed as I purchased from a forum vendor who probably should have known better.
