    Hey Mike,

    That 82 series you have in the back is actually a longish touring type travel shock, should be 373-617mm, very good lengths for the rear, and it has considerably better valving than the 90-5404 RAID, with something like 2300N/1500N. You can lift the rear up past 2" lift with that shock and still have very good droop around 100mm.

    Keep in mind it is only a small bore twin tube, so it will get punished in the rear and fade out.

    The real issue you have is the 88-1712 in the front. Just keep your lift around 1" and you'll be fine with it.

    What are your front and rear ride heights with the King coils?

      I have them on a Prado 120, raised 50mm and I haven't had any issues with them, 150 might be different?

        Hey,

        The 120 and 150 IFS and rear geometry are identical.

        To see how your droop will vary as a function of lift, see here for front struts;

        http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...-Prado-120-IFS

        ...and here for rear shocks;

        http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...for-120-150-FJ

        At 50mm lift, something like 45mm or more droop with the 88-1712 on the IFS depending on what coils you run. Somewhere around 70mm or more in the rear with the 90-5404, around 100mm with the 82-2386.

          Thanks again, goodish news on the rear, maybe not the front.

            Hey Mike,

            When you get a chance, you should jack up the front and check your droop. If you've got 50mm or more, you may be able to keep your ride heights (which are nice heights by the way) by adding a few spacers onto the shaft below the bottom washer. If you can squeeze in 5mm of spacers, that will be roughly another 10mm of droop you gain, so worth it!

            The droop you have will depend on your coil preload, coil rate and what the shaft open length is at ride height.

              I can fit 5 mm worth of spacers in too, which I think I'll do. Will this stop the shock from topping out?

                Hey,

                Ok, so 55mm of droop, not the worst, not the greatest.

                Adding another 10mm of droop to that is definitely going to be better for the life of the struts.

                The 88-1712 is 548mm open length, if you can space it down another 5mm, will make it 553mm.

                Regarding the topping out, I've seen 555mm open length Bilsteins beaten to death inside from top outs at 2" lift, top out spacer smashed to pieces, piston head with pieces broken off. So yes, it can happen. Sunny has killed his 88-1712 struts, I'm not sure what lift he was running, but he might chime in.

                Long term you may want to look at something a bit longer if you want to keep your ride height at 795mm, which is a very good height.

                I'd space the 88-1712's down as far as you can and run with them until you flog them, then look at something else!

                  Wouldn't installing a diff drop change this restrictions on drop.?? Then a longer strut be used or because the diff is now lower will this effect up travel. Cv bind?

                    Hey,

                    Diff drops do not increase droop. The change in CV angle with a diff drop in is minimal at full droop, only around 1.0deg. The benefit of a diff drop is to get the CV shaft as close to level as possible at ride height, and minimising wear and tear on them. Running lifts over 2" on the IFS will put big angles on your CV shafts, and this is when you should look at putting in a diff drop.

                    Droop is dictated by suspension geometry limits, either the open length of the strut shaft or the ball joint bind in the upper arm. CV bind occurs around 15mm of shaft length after upper arm ball joint bind.

                      I've tried pretty much everything including several Australian made products. Here is what I don't any longer use- twin tube foam cell. My preference is King Springs and the biggest Koni shocks that will fit. For my Prado that is 88s at the front and 90s at the rear. For my Nissan, it was 90s all round. Never ever had one fail. Had plenty of other brands fail, on the Canning. I'm not going to say my Patrol was way over GVM but let's just say it was damned heavy.
