  • Metallic Clunk when tapping the break

    Hi All,

I have a quite audible clunk (like someone tapping steel with a small spanner) when I tap the breaks.

Its only noticeable when sitting still windows down, but if I tap the break pedal it makes the noise.
breaking is fine and no shudders, pads are good and rotors look great.

is this noise experienced by others?

PS I also get a very simular noise when applying the hand break.

    Thanks

Sounds like pad knockoff taking up.

There is a small amount of clearance between the pads and calipers. The noise could be this movement of the pad. Most disc calipers will clunk particularly in reverse, the pads are set in forward and when brakes applied in reverse the pad will move to the other side of the caliper. Reversing out of my driveway the pads clunk every morning.
Without this clearance the pads will bind when hot as the pads expand.

If you want to hear a good thump thump, pull the handbrake on whilst moving and wait for the thump when the shoes grab the drum.

have you guys had brake pads changed since you've owned the car?
some people done put the anti rattle plate back in the pads when re installing
then the pads move forward & back more and wear grove in the pads & the pads move more & more & they then get stuck on the edges of calipers , when you put your foot down the piston has to move the stuck pad

that's what i have found on other cars
also check your wheel bearings by jacking up the wheel & rock it top to bottom ( mine has just started to have movement )

Well mine use to clunk in reverse, but since the Bendix 4WD pads went in and we left the anti rattle shims out the clunk has totally gone
