  • HEMA vs VMS Portable Off Road Navigation

Does anyone have experience with Hema Navigator HN7 and/or VMS 700HDX? Which is better for off road tracks etc?

VMS claims lists 1:25k topo maps - does HEMA have equivalent maps? I would like to have all tracks covered.

    Other factors?

    Hey mate.
A mate of mine gave me a lend of his Hema Maps GPS. He couldn't figure it out nor could I. I found it so hard to use.
On the other hand I downloaded Hema Maps to my Samsung Tablet. Have had it a couple of months and love it.
Its shows u every single road/track in Aus. Main road/ Gravel Road and 4x4 tracks.
I recently headed down to Wolfe Creek. No coverage was so ever down there. Used the maps off my Tablet and found it easily.
And I think its half price for the next couple of days 25 bucks.
    Its worth a look anyway.

    Cheers

    Paulie

From what I've heard from a person who owns/runs a 4WD accessories Shop.... go the HEMA unit. He had a bad experience with VMS and refuses to stock/sell the VMS equipment... but I'm sure if u do some googling u may get some better info

Is there a store in Sydney which has Hema and VMS demo units to compare?

Is there a store in Sydney which would have both the Hema Navigator HN7 and VMS 700HDX demonstrator units on display so I could try and compare?

I used to have VMS500 (screen issue 3 years back killed it) and I used only the Memory-Map feature on VMS with iTopo maps as the OziExplorer (I think this is what it was called) was complex and I could not be bothered to figure it out. Never tried HEMA but keen to give it a go. I saw recently new HEMA in few stores (Opposite Lock and ARB) but all were in the box so could not try.

Navman have a new unit called MyEscape III. I haven't seen the actual unit yet but the write up looks good. It is probably cheaper than the Hema which always seems over priced to me. Here is the link to the product page: http://www.navman.com.au/car-gps-dev...EIII/overview/

I am thinking of going with this one when I replace my current gps.

Portable GPS systems are a thing of the past. You can go Android tablet + OziExplorer for $25. Then add the Hema maps that you want. The benefit to Ozi is that you can use any map appropriately formatted (you can even format google maps satellite images, for example). The other systems won't let you do this. They are not as flexible. One of the only problems with Tablets can be screen glare. A matte screen protector can help with this.

The other one is heat. Its best to keep the tablets out of the sun

I wrecked the battery in one of mine. I kept hearing a quiet hissing sound. I think the issue was charging while hot.

X2 VMS have lost respect with a number of people after screwing us badly. Basically they changed their platform and left full paying parties with useless shit while they relaunched. I will never buy from them again. HEMA have proven to have a great product for my iPad and of course their traditional maps are great too.

Cant say I think much of the VMS now Mudmap on my Ipad, Hema is streets ahead in that regard. On the flip side I just got the Hema explorer app which seems to be well below their usual standard.

I have the older VMS HD and I thinks it's fantastic especially with the off road maps installed. Used it on Fraser and it shows every little track and path in great detail.
As for VMS backing their product, my experience is a good one.
My unit started to shutdown by itself for no apparent reason, and the problem could not be diagnosed over the phone. Sent the unit to them and they found that the problem was with the cigarette plug charger not giving out enough power. They replaced the charger and sent it back to me.
The best part was that the unit was out of warranty and they did not charge me a cent.
                    Good service I'd say.

                      X2 for VMS.

I have had mine for about 6 years now and hasn't missed a beat (maybe I've been lucky). I find it particularly useful being able to upload my own maps using an additional SD card, and run it almost exclusively using OziExplorer (unless I need the Street finder).

                        VMS Touring 700 portable GPS

I did not find a store in Sydney which had both Hema and VMS units to compare side by side.

I had a look at the Hema Navigator HN7 during the Sydney 4WD & Adventure Show at Eastern Creek and while it was good in the end I decided to go with the VMS 700HDX. I had good prior experience with VMS and it came with more maps. I particularly needed 1:25k Topo map for NSW.

I got VMS Touring 700HD X Outback Adventure Pack I from GPSOZ (http://www.gpsoz.com.au) in Sydney. It came with lots of maps e.g. in 1:25k scale NSW, Vic, Qld, and WA Topo maps, Camps7, Hema maps, Gregory's touring maps etc.

Works very well. Happy with the purchase.

What is the problem with your navigation unit? Hardware or software?

Anything that I should watch out for (early signs of issues)?

                            Where did you buy it?

I use mine in the off road mode on weekends and so far perfect (fingers crossed).

Interestingly my Prado VX standard Satellite Navigation System has decent coverage of the fire trails so, while VMS does give me a lot more, car GPS sometimes is also useful.

I have just bought a Navman MYescape III, i haven't used it in anger yet but have had a look at the maps it gives you, it comes with 8000 Hema maps, on the box it says "Here Maps" but when you search for a track it comes up with Hema maps. there is no detail it only tells you you are where you want to be, which is all i want, I'm happy it cost $400. Couldn't justify $700 for the HN7.
