Need small HD spring e.g. valve or clutch spring

This is nothing to do with Prados... other than I sometimes think about biltong while I'm driving.

I'm making a biltong guillotine and I'm looking for a small heavy duty spring to press the blade and block cutting edge together. Something with a 8mm-10mm (possibly even 12mm) ID would be perfect. Does anyone have one in a parts bucket rusting away..?

fridayman how long and how much tension? I will have a dig around and see what I have. More info would be handy though.

At the hinge I could simply put a bolt through, but having looked at a few guillotines I see that the better ones have a spring on one side of the hinge bolt (presumably to keep tension between the 2 cutting surfaces without having them bind). I'm not sure how much tension I need, but as the spring will be over the hinge bolt I can adjust the tension by tightening/loosening the hinge bolt & nut. As for length, again I'm pretty flexible as I can use any length bolt. At this point beggars can't be choosers so I'm happy to try any springs I can get my hands on (it can easily be changed if I need to).

Sorry no go. Torsion springs? I got. Tension springs? I got. Compression springs I don't got. At least not strong enough for this.

When I was on site we used to have little boxes of misc bolts, o rings, grease nipples, springs and so on. Maybe try Coventrys or Bursons.

I can also recommend smallparts.com.au if you get in a pickle, have a decent range and ship overnight (helped me before!!). Or a Bunnings spring kit.

Anywhere from half an inch to two inches should do the job. I'll take a look at Bunnings too.
