  • Rear Diff Lock light - Setup Guide

As you all know, the Aus Spec 120 doesn’t have a rear locker option but does have the light on the dash for those countries that do – I have wanted to do this mod since I had the ARB Rear Locker installed - but the sheer size of the wiring diagram and my lack of luck locating junction/ecu plugs have stopped me until now.

With thanks to Davis Diesco’s awesome post about the Torque Convertor Lockup install I have worked it out and here are some (very basic) instructions for all.

First remove the glovebox lower panel and glovebox

J21 is a Black 22 pin plug (not all are used though) that is taped against the main loom, you need to remove some layers of tape to get to it and its a tightly wound loom so I also removed the zip-tie and replaced afterwards.

Once you find the J21 plug, you’re looking for the MIDDLE Red-Green wire (there are three).
The quick way to see if you have the correct wire is to apply and earth to it – with the ignition on you will see the red rear diff lock light illuminate.

At this point I managed to break the silly little wire and spent ages trying to solder a trigger wire back on (upside down with no room and in the shadow…) Suggest you either splice or cut this wire as close to the plug as possible but either way it was a real pain!

From here you need a set-up that will take power from your locker switch (any brand – it’s just a positive switch, but highly recommend ARB!!) to a relay so as to apply earth to the red-green wire.

I had a spare Narva SPST relay (p/no 68024 for those playing at home) with 5 pins but you only need the 4 pin relay for this. I found the following diagram helped me but ignore the 87a pin for this though (it’s the wrong relay type but illustrates my point)

I chose to run both the 86 pin (positive) and 85 pin (negative) back to the Locker switch but you could just as easily just run the 85 back to the same earth point as pin 30.

I don’t have a photo of the last bit but basically you run the wire behind the dash (I used the space under the stereo), grab the positive and negative from your rear locker switch to activate the relay and light up the dash! As I don’t have a front locker I took power from the spare plugs (Switch 2 for those with the ARB loom) and you’re looking for the Yellow and either of the two Black wires for the earth.

As this is independent of the Prado’s 4x4 ECU you don’t need to the Centre Diff Locked to activate the light.

That’s it! – must admit to taking my time with this but now that its done I'm pretty chuffed with myself…

Installed the mod in Friday - great instructions worked well.

Problem now is that the Engine light won't go off. Would it be because I unplugged the Turbo ECU before I turned on the ignition to test the wiring as instructed? I have booked the car in tomorrow for am injector replacement with Baileys in Woolongong (135 km). Is it safe to drive down with the light on. It seems the turbo may not be operating properly?

            Any suggestions? - Sadly I don't have a scanguage.

              OK all fixed.

I went and bought a U-Scan from Supercheap. Once I scanned the error codes the light went out and the turbo rattle in standby started up as usual - no reset required.

              Lessons
              1. Don't turn on the ignition with the turbo controller unplugged.
              2. Don't buy the u-scan unless you are desparate. It doesn't know about Prados even though the box says it does.
              3. The error was P1264 - Turbo Controller malfunction

And here are the happy results - finally -

Maybe I'll fill in the top right hole with a front locker one day.

Overall I think it looks pretty factory.

Nice work Greg, sorry to hear about your troubles. I didnt unplug the turbo ECU when I dropped the glovebox - sounds like my laziness paid off!

Works like a treat and was a quick job.
What just came to my mind was what the other two Red-Green wires are for?
Other control lights (eg. front locker?) would be a close assumption but I did not check and everything is now nicely sealed with tape again
                  Does anybody else know?

                  Cheers

Great guide, I have an auto locker at the back but a switchable locker at the front, is there a light for the front? If so which wires are they?

One of the others goes to the (non-existent) Rear Diff Lock ECU and the other to the (non-existent) Switch.

Not having a front locker I didnt go looking for it but I note there is another indicator on the dash to the right of the rear locker light.

The indicator does look like my old nissan with the Auto 4x4 setting where it will engage centre LSD if rear wheel slip is detected. Im not aware of the Prado having a gear/transfer box that does this (100% power to rear and up to 50% transfers to front only when needed)
                        Cheers

As above - doesn't appear to be a light for front on my cluster.

Nice one. So those with two lockers could wire up the front one to the third light then
