We will find out next week how big it is. Rumour has it at 4.7" and maybe a bigger one at 5.5"

Yep I have both. The 4wd map is 2 Gig as well. That is pretty awesome as it has sooo many maps but the interactive POIs in Explorer are good to use. Rest stops and toilets and caravan parks with contact info and such. For $25 it's a steal I reckon.

Having had the Hema maps app for a fair while and having been very impressed, I had high hopes for the explorer app. First impressions are that it's a good thing I only paid half price!

Just looking locally most of the POI's are marked in the wrong place, and not just by a bit. There are service stations marked 3 Kms from where they actually are, and supposedly in the middle of someone's fruit block.

There are any number of formal and informal camp sites around here not marked either. It's early days but not at all impressed with it so far.

          Cheers Andrew

I was reading the reviews this afternoon before deciding to buy or not. Seems quite a few people writing negative reviews and not totally happy with the app or with the price. $50 for an app is a lot especially if it doesn't live up to what you expect.
Think I'll stick with Ozi Explorer.

Ended up buying it and i'm really impressed so far, the detail and track names is far better than the full hema app where some of the tracks either are not named, not marked or no longer exist. this seems a bit more updated. the ability to switch to RD-terrain-Sat view is handy. for $25 its a steal, definitely a good companion for the HEMA app

This might sound like a dumb question (i'm not too tech with this sort of stuff) but I ended up buying one for my Android phone galaxy S5. It automatically downloaded POI 80mB or so. It asked me if I want to download 2.3GB worth of maps for offline use. Well I don't want to do it now but will when I'm back home on my wireless. Where do I go within the app to download it later?

you could always delete the app and re-install it, it will sit in your "cloud" so they say..

Yeah I skipped that download initially yesterday as well, had to delete and reinstall again to get the prompt.

found where you grab them but it says my SD cards needs to be mounted, wtf? All other apps are using the SD card no worries. I might delete it and see if i can install it from SD card

I have this app on my Samsung tablet for quite a few months now.
                        I think its awesome.
U can pre record your trips. Save them on to the map. Different colour for each track.
On POI. If its a camp site it tells u whats available to u there i.e. water, showers, toliets, etc.
It also works as a radar.
And u don't need coverage for it to track u.
I went the back way into Wolfe Creek on my trip and without it I would still be looking for the place. Like a maze going in the back way.
                        Its a great job.

                        Cheers

Can you use the offline 4wd app maps if you have them already with the new HEMA Explorer app.
IE leverage the offline maps,in the HEMA explorer app when you are not online?

I don't think so Robert. It does have two maps installed so maybe they work offline. I'll have to go off road next weekend and check for ya 😩 oh what a shame haha

I'm sure I paid more than $100 for the HEMA map on iPad a year ago...

I guess it always pays to wait. It seems like the sweet spot at the moment would be a Retina iPad mini with cellular service with the HEMA app. The full-size iPad is quite large for on dash, so the mini would be about perfect. The price has come down on them too. The iPhone 6 plus would be great if you were getting one anyway as it would save you the cost of buying a tablet and means one less gadget to remember.
