  • Battery query

Need some battery advise please. What is the recommended battery for use in a V6 Prado 120. I've searched and found lots of conflicting info. If I have no additional aftermarket electrical stuff, should I use a 60, 70 or 90AH battery for a stock Prado? I've read of complaints that the stock battery is not strong enough, but most of the articles related to modded 120's.

The previous owner put in a 60AH battery in my car. However, I suspect it is on it's way out now and either case, a battery change might be good preventative maintenance as the current one has a 2009 stamp on it, so it's at least 5 years old now.

    Any advise please?

(BTW, I've searched and 80% of battery threads take me to dual battery installs...)

Hi Moe, If you have no extra electrical stuff I assume you have only the one battery in your vehicle that being for starting your car hence being called your "crank" battery. With your crank battery you don't need to really worry about ah too much as you crank battery's are mostly made to have a high current draw for a short amount of time and this ability is rated in a cca value( cold cranking amps). ah rating relates mostly to deep cycle batteries which are meant for small current drain over a long time eg. Accesories, fridges. If you are to buy a crank battery I would be concerned about cca value. I use a yuasa power series ultra which is the same as a century overlander, a tough local made battery with 760 cca which is enough for my diesel which requires a little more than a petrol to start
    Hope this helps Matt

I just get the biggest i can to fit. I would have to double check but think mine is 780cca (might be 750). I like to run my fridge some times when at the beach or days out etc and not have to worry bout draining battery. I didn't bother with duel batts in this Prado (previous two had it) as it doesn't suit me. I ended up with an ARK battery pack ($400 + battery) as I like to have the fridge in the tent sometimes if staying long periods instead of running back n forth to Prado..... Cheers Steve

As above, I would always fit the biggest amp hour battery that can fit in the cradle.

I chucked in a Supercharge All rounder 105 a/h 12 months ago, we have been on the road full time travelling and hasn't missed a beat. Great if you want to run a 12 volt fridge or other 12 volt stuff and not fork out for a dual battery setup. Good luck getting it sorted.
