  • Service intervals - Fluid change

Sup guys! Back again and guess what!!!! Today is the day that the Prado hits the road again. After sitting for close to 12 months not going anywhere or being started! So happy!

Anyway, I know how to start the motor after so long but I'm a little concerned about the drivetrain. It dawned on me when working everything out that I haven't changed the drivetrain fluids in at least 4 years :shock:ops::shock:opsleasepleasedonthurtmeipromisetoneverdoitagain:grin :

I know the recommendation is for 90w LSD type gear oil for the rear and 80w90 for the front (last time I just bought 90w LSD and dumped it in both)

The transfer case is 75w90 Synthetic

The auto is standard ATF... but does it really only take 2 litres as noted on the Nulon lube guide?

But we don't have the manual for the car anymore so I'm not sure how often it is required to service these items... I know very well that I need to do it NOW. But I'm giving myself a good spanking (in more ways then one) and will actually use the software on my computer to keep track of all the servicing of our four cars from here on out.

So when I'm doing it next? hehe

    You should:

Change engine oil before letting vehicle sit for long period.
Driveline oils will be fine sitting.
Auto is the one you might want clean/change before letting it sit for long.

    Generally:

Diffs & transfer & gearbox 40k rear LSD 20k if lots of offroad.
    Auto 50k? Negotiable.
    Brake fluid 2 years.
    Toyota coolant 3 years negotiable.

When I pulled the drain plug on my auto-box 5 litres of ATF came out. I'd read about the 2 litres thing too.

Just a quick response to one of your questions - ATF - expect to change around the 5L mark. I replaced around 6L when removing the sump to replace the filter.

Thanks guys, that sounds a lot more logical. Filter change is on the list also. Since the fluid is so old and doesn't smell burnt or anything I'm satisfied that the box is still relatively healthy... after 340K. But it is a Toyota right? With that in mind, I want to try and get as much fluid out as possible so I was going to use my little drill powered fluid pump hooked up to the cooler lines and try to empty that out as well. Thoughts? Am I being a madman?

Yes, you are a madman, for not having done this stuff for 4 years!! ;-)

For a full ATF flush I've read of people disconnecting the cooler hoses and placing one in an empty bucket and the other in container of new ATF. It may require 12L to completely flush, but I've never tried this myself.

Here's a maintenance interval list I have on my computer. Some are form the book, others are my own figures. Some things such as brake pads, CV's and all of the 150,000 items don't strictly need to be replaced on these intervals, a check is usually sufficient.

            7,500 - Engine Oil Filter
            7,500 - MAF clean
