I dont know, BIL claims to be a engineer, a software engineer (tries to hide snigger) so surely civils count??

Of course civils count. Electrical and electronic engineers make control and guidance systems, mechanical engineers make weapons and delivery platforms. Civil engineers supply the targets.

hey guys there has been a lot of talk about the weight of these bars and how they affect the front end
these bars are aluminium and from my experience they are lighter then the steel bars we put our prado's I remember being told about 60 to 70kg and the arb bars are about 80kg correct me if I'm wrong then we add winchs etc!
In my experience the effects these have on the steering and front suspension is that I needed a wheel alignment and my steering improved. I had a 5 poster on my old falcon, not as big as the one pictured but near enough, I use to go to bns balls.
I had lowered standard king springs in the front and when I added the bar it only dropped 15mm which put me spot on legal height
I never had an issue with the front end of my car, The had the bar on the car for 5 years and sold it with the bar on.
In regards to the one pictured the manufacturer SW Platt he is in Orange NSW, as stated on his web site this bar is the largest he has made.
He also states that his bars are airbag compliant just like the others, they do make legal 5 post bars but they're not the one's people want!
This commodore is on airbags just like all the mini trucks on air bags.

In regards to the article, It would be nice if they told the truth and not make stuff up like stating 5 post bars are illegal just get a head line.

              Pete

Airbag compatible doesn't mean legal. Refer the diagram from Qld transport I posted and the figure posted by Randall. In any case if the police have been incorrectly fining owners then there is recourse under law. Each to their own.

I have also recently heard that some have been fined for LED light bars, under the protrusions rule, and the for off road use only rule, even though they were not turned on at the time

Came in late to this thread. Pedestrian council are off the planet with their arguments and need to rethink their stance. While moo cows are a problem in station country... where vehicle safety is concerned there has to be limits. Having had all my family suffer unfortunate animal hits however...... anyone suggesting no bullbars can p off. As long as design regulations are met of course. If oversize bars are 'needed' then perhaps limit them..... like old farm licenses you used to be able to get.

Just like the thousands of people running fishing rod holders on the bar hundreds of kilometres from the sea.

The Land article summed it well there is no simple answer. Yes the oversized as in the original posting should be removed from roads.
The one in the Land article In my opinion should be allowed
The difference between these bars and a 'Smart' bar is these bars minimise the risk of skippy being flung onto the bonnet or into the windscreen, they keep them out front of the car, the Smart bars allow for impact but won't prevent skippy from rolling onto the bonnet etc
This is only an issue with 2wd's as 4wd's have the extra height as an advantage.

Also depends when it was fitted so if was legal when fitted they cannot make you change it.
so I guess in short its mostly late model utes that will be in trouble!

And BlackMoth a car with or without a bulbar can still kill pedestrians, just like comparing the 4wd to 2wds as pedestrian killers.
I think you'll find that accessory safety legislation can be retrospective, it's the stuff that's factory fitted that is usually exempt, so after market items that don't comply, can be ordered off.

Also IMO I think that a bulbar that deflects animals and pedestrians under the vehicle is liable to be far more deadly and dangerous than those that comply with the current laws, which should still allow a pedestrian to be picked up onto the bonnet and reduce injuries.
                                Common sense isn't that common.....
