  • Warranty Void?

When I purchased my GXL Prado in 2013 the sales rep mentioned in passing that I should not get a lift kit as this will void the factory warranty. The warranty is 3 + 3 years.

At the time I did not think much about it. However, after a few few trips, I find the car, when loaded, is a bit too low to the ground especially with 600 kg on board and the boat on the back driven over rough 4WD tracks.

At first I though I would just add coil assist air bags. But the 4WD shop I use suggested that I fit a 50mm lift with new shocks, springs and then air bags if needed. It's their view that I'll be back wanting a lift after the air bags and then I'll need new air bags as they won't fit the new lift kit. They claim its the norm to go for a lift. So why f@#$ about.

I mentioned about my warranty concerns and they said they had never had or heard of a problem?

Plus every 4WD show you watch all tell you to get after market suspension and a lot drive new Toyotas. But their sponser is always an after market suspension company.

I mentioned about getting a lift kit to the wife who drives the car to work and back etc and thinks it hers and her response was - I am happy to drive it if its 50mm higher and its still a soft and smooth ride.

One of two others on Pradopoint have mentioned this issue but it has never been explored especially due to the tail shaft clunk which is blamed on the lift kit rather than a faulty tail shaft. But in each case it appears Toyota have done the repairs under warranty.

I can undertsand Toyota not covering the springs and shocks but why would it void other warranty claims unless its caused by the springs or shocks? They also force you into Toyota genuine accessories for the same reason or they are of a better quality.

I thought about asking Toyota but it may be better not worrying about it and just do it and if something goes wrong worry about it then and argue with Toyota when you have something to talk about rather than a hypothical question.

Have other members had this issue or concern and did you worry about it? Has Toyota rejected your warranty claim?

    Mike

The tail shaft clunk is not caused by lifting. That's only been reported once on this site and was obviously dealer generated
Hundreds if not thousands of members here have lifts. I've not recalled any warranty claims not honoured because of lift.
My Prado has lift and I've had many claims honoured. Infact not one has been turned down.

The obvious point to make here is the only warranty that can be voided is on the sections changed to aftermarket. Eg if your power window motor dies, they cant claim your warranty is void because you changed your suspension, exhaust, etc. It's all relevant to the part replaced.
My Rig: 150 GXL D4D, Tough Dog adjustable suspension with 60mm lift, Polyair bags, ARB Winch Bar, Warn Winch with Dynamica Rope, Outback Ideas recovery points, GME UHF, HID Low/High Beam, Lightforce Genesis HID Spots, Dual Battery Setup with rear power outlets, ARB air compressor in engine bay, ~30L Watertank mounted behind fueltank.

They can (not will) deny claims with a lift with almost anything to do with the driveline, such as CV's, ball joints, TRE's, steering box and components, drive shafts, bushes etc.

Question!.. Has the service manager ever looked under the prado?...

#1 There is a lower wishbone with a certified/engineered bump stop on it!... Can not exceed its designed upward travel limit!.. With or without lift!

#2 when you jack the rig up it can't travel ovally downward too far due to sway bar despite longer shockie strutt!

#3 when the stock suspension is fitted the drive shaft sits approx 5-10-deg above parallel alignment! (Outer CV aligned to inner CV).

When the Legal ADR 40mm limit lift is fitted the drive shaft alignment sits parallel!

Question!.. Which CV drives more smoothly!... The one that sits parallel CV to CV or the off set one?

This is why the ACCC & Fair trade with the ADR rules was put into place to stop the "They can if they want" behavior!

I suppose if they think they can spook the local punter then I'm sure they will!

          Cheers

I am not an engineer but take this advice. After ten years of owning Prado's (all the same GXL chassis) you will not hurt anything at all on a Prado by lifting it 40 or 50mm. Like Piggy, I've had claims not rejected or any crap like that. Just do it sensibly and mechanically, you will be fine.
