  • 2010 gxl DP chip purchase

    Guys
After looking for a vehicle i found a 2010 GXL TD, arb bar with winch, lift kit, tow bar and racks.
It is from a large Toyota dealer here in sth oz and i have put 500 bucks on to secure the sale, so excited until i started to read here
    And ask questions.
Vehicle has 56,000 kms and has a DP chip with an exhaust, i will be honest i knew nothing about D4D engines until now.
Sale of this car is over the phone to the salesman and it has a 1 year certified warranty, question is will these aftermarket accessories
    Be covered?
After the deposit was put on the car i have felt the conversation with dealer become different.
I know i have to find this out for myself but im just after some peoples thoughts.
I am amazed at the fact of 20000psi in the fuel rails, injectors require scanning?...., inspection of oil pick ups at 5000km intervals.
After making my decision to go from a Holden HSV i have a lot to learn not to mention deeper concerns and potentially deeper pockets!

I'm more inclined to buy a Prado without a chip. I'm sure Toyota will be pointing the finger at the chip should anything go wrong with the engine.

Being a 2nd hand vehicle with Toyota new vehicle warranty gone i understand the dp chip warranty doesent apply either.
So im left with one year 2nd hand Toyota certified warranty, or i pay additional $1800 for 3 years turning this into a 54k deal.
Put it down to experience.....see if the dealer is ready to talk today because yesterday he ignored my request at giving me a call
      When he has the time.
Funny how they say ive done you a great deal favour etc mate mate....when i walk into a couple other dealers and get the same trade in valuation, not to mention the finance deal 7.9% then i shop around and get 6.2%.

If you're getting cold feet because you're not sure of the state of the car then losing the 500 deposit might be a better option than costly repairs down the track.
        Cheers

Sale over the phone?? You have inspected the car, yes?

It's worth ditching your $500 if you can get better finance elsewhere. You'll have your cooling off period.

I live 350 kms away and it is priced well, havent signed nothing yet, i organised my own finance and hes allowing me some time to sell privately.
So i appreciate his commitment towards the deal but its like rolling a dice after talking to people and reading on here.
From what i gather i dont have much to worry about if i get it all checked over periodically?
Paying attention to oil pickup every 5k and getting the injectors looked at seems about the main issues i gather.
Surley its not all that bad once this has been done for piece of mind and happy motoring?

At those km it should be fine. Ask the dealer to do an injector feedback test and give you the numbers. That will give you an idea of where they are. Post the numbers here for any advice from those who know. As for the chips I am not an advocate and while the dealer has sold the car with chip fitted who knows what the chip has been set to in its past life. With regards to the 1 year warranty if it is the dealer's own then be wary, read the fine print some are limited on what they cover, how much you can claim on any one claim and also some have a total spend limit. Ask for the Toyota genuine Extracare warranty though I am not sure if it is only available to the original owner. The Extracare warranty is good unlike most of the dealer warranties. Ask about the warranty covering the chip and whether anything wont be covered because of it and get this in writing. The chip obviously is already installed and being sold by a dealer as such. If there is any doubt walk away. Just my thoughts.

On CRD it's smart To avoid any chips that increase fuel pressure.

I'm not a fan of chips, well I like fish n chips, but I avoid that too, they can increase blood pressure & cause heart attacks.

Great advice, it looks like i need to carry a big stick and beat the salesman up especially around the ears.
2 weeks ago i was thinking that buying a diesel is the most reliable and carefree soloution to getting in the dirt miles away from
                  Anywhere.
It will end up costing me more no doubt, so im getting to the point where i may as well get a 2013 TD, 30,000k with known history.
Very close to walking away thats for sure.

I learnt once with a camper trailer never buy unseen and this was a brand new one. I also nearly bought an 80 series cruiser in Melbourne from the net. Owner saying how great it was blah blah pictures looked great. Spent $800 on a long weekend flying myself and mechanic mate with me to check it out, just had that feeling. Was the BEST $800 I have ever lost. Saved me thousands in the long run, 80 series was a piece of shit. Then bought the 120 series best one I've had. .... Just my opinion but I will never spend more then a couple of hundred bucks sight unseen eg on eBay. If It cost me more and I can't see it before handing the $$$ over it doesn't happen.... My mate trades his hiace vans in every 3 years (runs his own business) he has them chipped and turned up to the max. Not sure what damage would be getting done if any in that period ?? .... Cheers Steve

An injector feed back test is a rather simple job and not unreasonable to ask the dealer?
Its all about what i can do for them not what they can do for me at this stage.
Good to hear from an old mate that is a service manager tell me that he has seen 4 engines all with damaged pistons due to chips (not certain what type). Id better stop whingeing i spose .
Now how about peoples thoughts on the FJ! Haha fire away...

I love the FJ but limited space in the back compared to the prado. And I dont like the way the rear cargo door opens up the wrong way...other then that I love the look, the seats, dash etc and the rear diff lock is a bonus also... Wish they bloody make it an option on the prado instead of having to buy a bloody 90thou plus vehicle before you get one (kaka).......Cheers Steve

Feedback test is very easy and not an unreasonable request.

If you're thinking of an FJ, consider also the Prado V6.
