  • Insurance on Fraser Island

    Hi PP members,
I'm very new to the offroad community..... And loving it.
I've just bought a 2014 gxl and I'm planning a trip to Fraser later this year, with a friend bringing his 4wd to help out if/when I get into a bind.
My BIG question is.... will most comprehensive policies (like nrma) cover me for any incidents on the island? Is recovery excluded but repairs included? I've read a few posts on insurance, focusing on budget providers like youi and budget direct, however this isn't really my concern re service / cost, I really want to know will I be covered? I know fine print will need to be reviewed, just wanted to get some feedback?
    Thanks.
    Pete

Best bet is to phone your insurer and be sure to ask for inclusions and exclusions. NRMA comprehensive do cover off roading so long as it's not any form of motorsport you are partaking in and obviously, provided their terms and conditions are met.

Insurance is one of those complicated products that is best left to those who truly understand it.

I have a number of different policies and all are managed by my broker. He has been looking after our family for over 25 years and couldn't recommend him more.

My vehicle insurance be it not the cheapest covers my Prado anywhere in Australia, on or off road, public or private property, beach, Island bush Simpson it doesn't matter. Also covered for flood.....no not swimming in Nolan's Brook but never the less would be covered.

This kind of insurance gives me the peace of mind that at least I need.

I would find a good broker that should be able to answer any question and guide you to the best and best value for money insurance.

One thing I would add - If you talk to your insurer on the ph and they give you the advice you want to hear, ask where it is written in your contract and make sure you understand the wording should you need to quote it back, etc. Also get the name of the person you are talking with for future reference.

PS - Stay away from Just Car or any insurer thats owned/under written by Suncorp.

I agree with others it will pay to check but if you drop the tyre pressures Fraser did not present many challengers. If you check tides you should not have too many issues.

I'm with Youi and asked them the same question when we bought our Prado. They said as long as you're allowed to be there (i.e. not trespassing on private property) and it's for recreational purposes(i.e. not comp), you are covered.

Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

Pretty sure the tracks on Fraser are gazetted roads. The main beach is at least, so you should be ok. Getting a tilt tray out there for roadside recovery might be another matter, however.

Most decent insurers cover you to utilise the vehicle in line with manufacturer specs. So even if you've got a lift and breathers and are crossing water deeper than the Prado's standard wading depth (~700mm) you'd have a hard time making a claim

in 2010 i had my cruiser insured with Just Car insurance (due to turbo and intercooler mods not covered by mainstream companies - apparently a turbo on a 1HZ is a performance modification ) anyways, on the second day i had a tree fall on my the roof of my cruiser and cave it in while parked at lake birrabeen. this was all covered under insurance, despite me being off a gazetted road. but like others have said, best to check with your provider to be sure

First post so probably a good time to say hi as well guys. Hi.

I wrote my car off on Fraser on the Eastern Beach on Good Friday. Wasn't sure if we were covered so I was pacing the beach a bit for a while but RACQ were great and had a tilt tray to us in a hour or two from Eurong. We went from the crash site to Eurong for a while to wait for the tide, barge over to Inskip, swapped trucks at Inskip and off to the holding yard at Rainbow. Wednesday the assessor visited the car, wrote the car off and the valuer called a couple of hours later. We agreed on a price and the money was in the bank on Monday. Prado 150 in my driveway on Saturday after chipping in a bit extra.

The hardest part was getting home with the camping gear from Rainbow on Easter weekend due to lack of hire cars so we didn't get home until late Saturday night after driving to the Gold Coast and back to grab a work ute.

What I take from the experience is don't drive on the beach at night and make sure you have good insurance. i.e. not the cheapies unless you check them out first.
