  • Reversing Lights

    Hello,
To assist with reversing I've added 2 LED lights to the rear of the car. I have wired the lights to the reverse wire on the trailer plug. Once the lights were wired I did a test to ensure that they were working correctly. They worked so I tidied up the installation - tubing, tape, cable ties and screwed the trailer plug back into place. I then tested the lights again and they are not working. The vehicle reverse lights do work. I stripped the cabling back to the join point and found that there is no voltage at the incoming trailer reverse wire.

Is there a separate fuse for the trailer loom, if so, where can I find it?

    Regards,
    John

Hey mate, there is a fuse for the trailer loom in the engine bay. Its an unmarked 30a mini blade fuse between the radio no.2 fuse and the DR/LCK fuse in the front left of the fuse box.

Hi Shangus, thanks for taking the time to reply - that is great info. Unfortunately, as I was driving tonight I discovered the errors of my way. It seems when I metered the trailer plug for the reverse wire I must of had my headlights on. It seems that I wired the new lights to the tail lights wire ops: instead of the reverse lights.

I'll try again tomorrow, but don't anticipate any issues, hopefully.

      Cheers,
      John

By wiring up to reverse lights in trailer wiring wont they also come on as indicators ?

Good luck with it John. That fuse I mentioned is just for the trailer indicators I believe after a bit of research , not the whole loom. It's toyotas secret fuse :-) post some pic's up of the finished job in the "what did you to your 120 today" thread and show us all your handy work!! Saying g'day in the introductions thread is a great idea as well..

NO, not if you don't hook into the indicator circuit at the same time.

              Cheers Andrew

Is hooking up reversing lights to the trailer plug wiring ok?

Is the wiring adequate for the current draw of both the LED reverse lights AND potential reverse lights on a trailer?

I was thinking of tapping into the trailer plug wiring reverse as the trigger for a separate relay, but running a separate power run to the relay to power the lights.

To be honest, probably overkill and could wire the lights directly to trailer reverse as I have never towed a trailer with reverse lights....

I don't know if I have ever seen a trailer with reverse lights let alone towed one.

I think the answer to your question will depend onthe size of your addition reverse lights, generally LED's have pretty low current draw though.

                  Cheers Andrew

Easier solution: kick the bitch out of the passenger seat and get her to guide you with a torch. You just know she's not going to be happy with where you park anyway so this will kill two birds with one stone so to speak. Now, she can't whinge about the spot that she directed you to put the trailer in when you want to camp up for the night. I also have two LED lamps mounted on the rear of the roof-rack that takes care of extra illumination when reversing.

(In my wife's own words she describes herself as the "camp-bitch". No, she's not a lesbian. Her jobs at the camp site include but are not limited to: keeping the fire going, making mornos, adjusting the solar panels, making lunch, keeping the beer stocked in the fridge, making arvos, planning for dinner and some area beautification when she's done all the other tasks.)

                      Voila!

Used to use fog lamps but most recently one of Sunyee's 6" LED bars, soon to be a matching pair. Situated just below the number plate and righthand lights in the channel frame.

I have a led fitted to the rear, comes on in reverse and with a isolation switch for town, can switch it off from drivers seat ( too bright for KFC car park ) and running through a relay, why chance damaging the original wiring and harness. I also wired the light with a remote so it can be turned on without the car being in reverse but as far anyone can tell it only can be used in reverse. I fitted reverse lights to my trailer, makes it a lot easier to see, no street lights at my place.
