  • V6 transmission oil cooler

    Hi all,
Would I be correct to say that the V6 auto trans is fitted with a factory oil cooler...?
Looks like one is fitted where most guys seem to be mounting an aftermarket cooler.
2009 150 GXL V6 Auto. Ironman deluxe bullbar, uniden uhf, ironman awning, roof mounted solar panel, softdog suspension, adjustable upper control arms, lightforce 240 spotlights, 265/70/17 Hancook Dynapro's, Sidewinder dual battery system, Maxtrax, Engel fridge, ARB draw system, Ironman Snorkel, Roadsafe Recovery Points, 80 watt Solar Panel.
    CUB Supavan Stockman camper.

Yes you would be correct, for some reason it was deemed necessary on the V6 but not the Diesel, same deal on the 120.

    Cheers Andrew

      Jaymboze,

As you have fitted an aftermarket bar, check to make sure the cooler radiator is protected from stones being thrown up by oncoming vehicles.

I thought the later model diesels have one integrated into the radiator?

Autos have had coolerss in the radiator since forever, all the diesel Prado's had this as well, just not the air cooled style that the V6 has.

          Cheers Andrew

That's because of all the POWER that you get from the V6 compared to a stinky Diesel Andrew...

Reminds me of a saying I heard once when trying to understand the difference between power and torque.

You can have Torque without Power
              Power with out Glory
But never ever Power without Torque.

              So Torque trumps Power

              Cheers Andrew

                  Thanks guys.
Would it be worth fitting a larger unit to replace the factory one as I will now be towing a new camper which weighs approx 1500kg...?

Just finished making a stone guard out of steel fly screen mesh which will sit behind the grill in front of the coolers.
Cost me about $20.00 for the parts from bunnings.

                    Cheers

Tow a van over 2,000kg with the standard unit, including many hills in NSW, Vic and SA, so far so good, don't push too hard on the big hills on a hot day.

I had a steel mesh insect screen left over from my 80 series cruiser, so I removed the Prado grill, zip tied the screen to the back of the grill, cut out just a little bit of the top of the screen to clear the bonnet release lever, and stuck it back on. There is just a very small gap around the edge of the screen behind the grill, but nothing to worry about. Leave it there permanently.

Also have a plastic mesh tie-on screen which I fit to the front should I hit a locust plague out west. If you have ever driven into a locust plague, you will know how quickly they clog up the radiator, and even with a steel mesh screen, the legs, wings and other bits still get through.

Yeah, I drove through a plague many years ago in my old falcon.
The car looked like both Alien and Predator threw up all over it...!
Took weeks to get the crud off and insect body parts fell out every time i washed it.
