  • Auber Instruments SYL 2813 Dual Channel Gauge and TurboSmart Boost Controller Install

I haven't done anything special to the old girl for the last 150,000 kms or so, so I decided to fit a dual channel gauge to monitor EGT and boost, as well as installing a boost controller, prior to a DP Chip install later this year. The job was surprisingly easy with a few basic hand tools and a torque wrench as well as several sessions consulting PradoPoint (Thanks Ozi Off Road/MickL, Joey and a few others)

I had a bit of a think about installing the EGT probe pre or post turbo and pre turbo made the most sense to me. The trick to removing the exhaust manifold for drilling is to remove the EGR crossover pipe and exhaust manifold studs (after removing the manifold nuts/bolts and the nuts holding the manifold to the turbo). Once these have been removed the manifold removes very easily.

Drilling the hole for the probe fitting was simply a case of putting the heat shield back on and marking where the hole should go. I mounted it about 30mm up from the junction between the manifold and the turbo. I used a battery drill and a 6.8mm HSS drillbit and drilled nice and slowly keeping the drill square/straight. Tapped the hole and installed the fitting. I then enlarged the original hole in the heat shield using a 16mm drill bit.
All up it took about 4-5 hours on a freezing cold winter weekend out in the carport to mount the EGT probe and further couple of hours to fit the boost tee, gauge, new MAP sensor (Auber 303)and run the sensor wires into the cabin. I ran the wires through the firewall grommet just below the brake booster. I'm not entirely happy with the location of the gauge but cant think of a better place for now.
Max boost prior to boost tee install was 10-ish PSI, now running at 12.5 with controller turned all the way down to its lowest setting. There is a definite improvement in low/mid end engine response. Cant wait to install the DP chip!!!
EGT readings are bit scary though. There is a long-ish hill that I drive up at 100kms in 4th (its a 4 spd auto) and after installing the gauge its reading over 700 degrees when I get to the top. Needless to say I now take it a bit easier. Cruising on the open road/highway at 100kms I get readings of mid 300's. Haven't done any towing yet so will be interested to see the readings when towing a couple of tonne of firewood up a hill!!!

    See photos for finished install.
