  • Prado with poor ride quality- just shocks?

Thought I would consult the prado specialists in regard to my 2008 GXL.

Bought it with 90k on the clock, now at 160k and she feels harsh even on small deviations in the road and feels a bit loose so to speak.

We dont do any heavy duty offroad, just dirt tracks with the odd rut/erosion hump sections (we don't offroad that much).

They look to be the standard shocks/springs, and I don't want to lift it etc.

Is it unusual to have shocks worn out at this stage?

Should I get all the chassis bushes checked out as well(figuring this contributes to the ride).

And lastly what shocks should I buy keeping in mind we don't offroad too much and highway comfort is a priority.

All advice appreciated and good to see a forum for the Prado, helps a lot .

I reckon 160k is a pretty good life out of a set of shocks and would most likely need to be replaced.

With this amount of k's it wouldn't hurt to get everything checked over and renewed as required.

Agree with Pugaree. My 2008 D4D had a lift done at 120,000 and they said shocks had just about had it then.

You need new shocks & struts.

New shocks will give you new bushings. 3rd party shocks will still work with standard height Prados and usually cheaper than OEM.

I agree at those K's the shocks are almost certainly knackered, springs have quite possibly sagged as well. Measuring from the bottom edge of the rim through the centre of the hub to the bottom of the mudguard flare they should be around 750mm front and 780mm rear, if its much less than that your springs have sagged as well, which would not be uncommon for those K's.

              Cheers Andrew

Umm, at 251,000kms mine haven't done a bad job then!, the front has sagged to the shithouse though when i compare it with other 120's.

I knew I could count on you guys for a wealth of information, I have had little to do with 4wd maintenance (dirt bikes are my game).

Aj120 I will definitely check my springs, thanks for the tip.

Hope to slow down on the spending on this rig, just put new engine mounts in 500 fitted , ouch.

Made a hell of a difference though.

                      Thanks again guys.

What tyres are you running . The tyres made the biggest difference in ride quality for mine when I changed to light truck from passenger tyres

I reckon shocks would be the most neglected part on the average motor vehicle, they deteriorate so slowly that you just get used to how they feel and cant remember the difference. I reckon if you pulled your suspension and swapped in some new gear you might be shocked at the difference.

As for the mounts the mechanic noticed it I thought d4d motors vibratet the car any way but once they replaced them
