D4D alternator failure - an interesting saga

With the alternator and transmission? No. With dealer servicing? YES!
FYI, my battery has been in my 2010 VX since new and it's still doing the job (though a year ago Kmart told me i needed a new one). Just about to do the 140k service, so we'll see what they say. Good luck.

Hello all,
How does the alternator fail? What are the symptoms?
I had a starter motor fail in my LR discovery at 120,000km some years ago and was quoted "about $800' to fix. I pulled it out and replaced the moving contacts in the solenoid for a total cost of "about $25". It was still working fine when I dumped it ( traded on a 150 Prado ) at 190,000 km. I do not trust any of the trade professionals these days.
regards
Ross

I'm in the process of fixing what looks like a failed alternator..... Failed on the way home from the cape. Its amazing how much current the d4d engines draw when purely relying on battery power alone.cheers..... Rob (macca)

Went and visited the local toyota dealer..... he made a few calls and it looks like I have to deal directly with toyota australia as they can't help me as they didn't do the work. It also appears the alternator's Clutch pulley failed and not the actual alternator itself.... Will have to wait and see how things go....
