  • 2nd New Head - What is causing it?

Auto 2002 TX Turbo Diesel. Just had the bad news a new head is required which is a major shock considering a new head was fitted by Toyota less than 8 months / 18,000kms ago. $4000 blown.

300,000 came up whilst on highway, so next day had new timing belt fitted. The mechanic doing the work noted that the existing belt was one notch out, which would explain the sudden increase in power after new one was fitted. A day later whilst on heading north the engine suddenly overheats and starts missing, lots of white smoke. Pulled over, got local diesel mechanic out who took taken head off and had it tested. Damaged and new one needed.

What is likely to cause it to happen so soon again? No one wants to give me a reason and how can I avoid it happening again (By a Ford!)
Should I insist on a non Toyota Head be fitted this time?

Do I have any claim against Toyota to cover costs of another head, being as they did not fit timing belt correctly and their original part (head) has not lasted longer than would be expected

Not a very good advert for Toyota Servicing and original parts.

    Damaged or faulty?

It depends on what caused it to overheat. The head or something else in the cooling system?

What caused the last one to fail and what else was replaced when they fitted the new head.

I doubt it is a faulty head because you have had 18 months & 18,000 kms without issue.
Then the day after the timing belt has been changed and a "sudden increase in power" you have an overheat and a damaged head.

Did the mechanic who removed the head check the timing belt was fitted correctly?
When the head was changed by Toyota did it feel down on power?
If not, why then the sudden increase in power after the last timing belt change?

I would be asking questions of the workshop who replaced the belt.

I tend to agree with Leethal on this one. Although I believe that cooling system or overboost probs are a big factor in failures it just seems too much coincidence that it happened so soon after the belt change. Gawd I'm glad I do my own; I always know which clown screwed up so I can abuse the ***t out of him and then get over it!. Get an AMC head for replacement.

The way I'm reading it you got the power increase after Toyota fitted the new head not the current mechanic who just fixed it ?? He was the one to find issue with timing belt out ?? Also I wouldn't use Toyota head as the part number hasn't changed since day one, not even a revised part number. To be honest even with belt out a tooth I doubt that was the issue. You sure current mech let it bleed properly and you didn't end up with a hot spot due to air in the system ?? Seems very strange you had no issues prior for 18 months except a bit more go then you have it serviced and it goes bang the next day,, seems odd to me... Personally I don't see you getting any help from Toyota, not now.... Cost me 4k as well 3 years ago when mine went...Cheers Steve

90's with 1kz did a few heads, add auto more likely, add older partially blocked radiator more likely...... Etc etc.

With your new head, you should have had a new radiator, especially in those vehicles the cooling system needs to be 100%+
########## ( no longer on this Prado website) highly recommends the AMC heads & a radiator upgrade. I think on the 120 the cooling system size was increased & reduced this head problem considerably. We don't hear much about them lately really.

You need to find out why it overheated. Was the cooling system full? Is the radiator blocked? Did you get a new one last head job?
Is the waterpump leaking? Is the thermostat stuck & corroded? Etc......

So new AMC head & a new radiator is a good start.

Good and bad news. Head was cracked in the combustion chamber, gasket all OK. Had it out with Toyota and they put me onto the none original head suppliers they used. These guys have sent a replacement across the country under warranty. Bad news still camped up at side of road for last 8 days waiting for head.
Apparently they suspect it was a fault at manufacturing. Will advise when I know more. Will look at replacing radiator as insurance, can only be a good thing for the engine.

Let me guess, cracked to the water jacket through the exhaust port, maybe no. 2 or 3?
########## put an all alloy Aussie Desert Coolers rad in his KZJ95 and reckons it holds an extra 2L of coolant. That would have to be a good thing and I will probably go that way when I change the current one (which was a brand new denso at the head change).
