  • Water Tap in 150 Rear Door

I recently had a set of Drifta drawers with a stainless water tank installed in my Kakadu.
The standard install comes with gravity fed hose tap fitted so that it can be used out the rear passenger side door.
I decided to fit a tap into the little storage compartment which is next to the tool box in the rear door.
Here is the link to the tap that I used.

The whole job cost about $60 and took me about 3 hours, athough it would have been a lot quicker if I had of removed the drawers.

The is a manual isolation tap on the pipe as it leaves the tank and the pump is installed under the edge of the tank behind the back seats.

Power comes from the previous installed ABR sidewinder kit that brings power from the Aux battery to the area where the jack is stored.

As the tap is switched on by means of a simple toggle switch I was a little worried it might get bumped on by something else that was stored in the compartment so I fitted an isolation switch in the top left corner of the compartment.

The tap and pump are built to use a 10mm ID hose. I used reinforced hose to avoid kinking when the door is closed. The hose fits through the rubber sleeve that carries the cables to the rear door. Its a little snug but spray it with Inox and it goes through ok.

If anything the water comes out of the tap a little fast, so it might help to step the hose down to a smaller diameter to reduce the flow, which would also make it easier to pass through as well. There is only 2 speeds, flat out or off, so I may look at installing something in future to that the pump speed can be varied.

The tap spout just swivels around when you need to use it, when not in use you just swivel it back and the compartment cover just goes back on as normal.

    Hopefully that all makes sense

Take a look down at your local pet store for the little inline taps you can use to reduce flow in aquarium air lines. I'm not sure if the diameter will be right but worth a try. Something like this might work :-

Tying a knot in the hose can have the same effect too.

Top idea on the tap though, keeps it out of the way when not in use.

Yeah it s a great idea! Your local hydraulic hose fittings shop should be able to find you a flow reducer..

Nice work! I've just had a custom stainless water tank made to fit between the rear diff and rear fuel tank. I was going to mount a tap on the Kaymar bar with a pressure pump feeding it but I might have to rethink that idea after seeing your setup.

            Thanks Guys,
I have a control tap fitted just as the hose leaves the tank so I can isolate the whole thing in case of a leak in the hose, so I think I will try just turning that partially on and see if I can reduce the flow that way.

Greenie, the only problem using my system in your situation is that the pump I used is not self priming and therefore needs to be mounted lower than the tank, but the tap is sold separately so I cant see a problem using it with a different pump. Having the tap inside would definately be a better option to keep it clean and out of the way of possible damage though.

I went to Drifta to look at their systems, and one of their demo vehicles - the 70 series LC - had a tap in the rear door, in an installation that was similar to yours. Did Drifta help you with sourcing the tap and things?

I'd appreciate a pic too of your drawers. Have you removed your rear seats and had two drawers side by side, a slide table on top of one drawer, and a fridge slide on the top of the left - passenger side - drawer? I think that's what I'll do if I don't go the trailer route.

                      Hi Melbourne,
No Drifta didnt source my tap, I bought in on line from Whitworths.com.au. It works a treat and so do the drawers. Side by side with a drop down fridge slide on the left and a table on the right. The Drifta table is great too because it is completely removable and you can use it as a table away from your truck.

If you are still thinking about whther to buy the drawers or not, stop thinking, just buy em. Great mate.

An update on this old post for the benefit of anyone thinking to do a similar install
The particular tap and pump that I have used here has no "valve" that closes when you turn the switch off on the tap
On a recent trip I managed to get myself stuck in the mud on a steep track coming out of my overnight campsite due to overnight rain and a fallen tree (note: dry weather only may be good on the way in but not on the way out in the morning. Thanks Mr Tigerz11 for my winch :-). )
When I opened the rear door to get my winch controller out the siphon effect of opening the door which was now lower than my water tank caused the water to run, well, like a tap basically.
Now I do have a stop cock intalled inside the rear passenger door so with some slipping and sliding in the mud I could turn it off (which I should have done before starting up the hill) but I have since made a small addition to the install in that I have now got a 10mm rubber chair leg that slips over the end of the spout when not in use that solved the problem

Learn by doing I always say :-)
