• Start of "The Pearl" transformation...April 2014

Well we started the transformation two and a half weeks ago - our rig is a 2009 "Pearl White" Grande. Her history was simple she was a shopping trolley in Bundaberg until April this year 2014. (see pic one). Brought her from a reputable Dealer in Brisbane with three years Warranty.

I have planned the build meticulously as i want the rig to be fully "self sufficient" - towing nothing.

So the plan is:
Fit BullBar complete with Winch and driving lights/Install a Roof Rack to carry all other items including RTT/Fit Snorkel/Install dual battery system/install inverter for our electronics-cameras etc. pure sine wave/Install draw system to hold all our goods and chattels/Wire the vehicle so it can service all our gear AND tow anything at a later date.

Step 1/
Bullbar: Designed an ARB bar researched ALL available with the ARB winning the quality/reputation/looks and reliability of install. Had the bar colour coded and so pleased I did - it looks so good.

Winch: Checked them ALL out and decided on the Domin8tor from 4wd Supa Stores - Great price and a good quality winch for what we will be using it for... touring, light 4X4 excursions etc. and the lap one day... think in 2015!
Very impressed with build of the Domin8tor supplied it to ARB who obliged by fitting it for me. Had the Solenoid etc placed under neath the bar.

Lights: What a nightmare of, selection, variation and pricing. and after LOTS of evaluation decided on the Koor Square 90W LED unit. I fitted THREE to the front of "The Pearl" and I am just sooooo pleased with the result.
Looks good, quality install and wiring by ARB and I gotta say they light up the road ahead like nothing else! - VERY pleased with the selection!

Pic Two: Bar/winch/lights install...

More to come:
Ostrich Awning/Redarc Dual Battery system install/under car protection (ARB)/Protective Wrap the whole car/RTT/Airtec Snorkel/Set of Coopers (in around 10K k's time). Suspension alterations as per AMT to existing airbags etc.

I am too... going to see "Tiny's" in Ormeau as soon as I can - just to see one myself before I order!
Off to the Caravan and Camping show tomorrow... looking forward to see some goodies up there as well.
Just back in from Sydney where I had my ORS draws fitted.

Stage 2 -
Snorkel:
Here is the next phase, completed the Airtec Snorkel install before going to Sydney to get my Off Road Systems draws installed.
Had TJM fit the Snorkel as I did not like the look of the ARB unit. Very happy with the install and looks great!

ORS
-Spoke with Steve from ORS and between us we designed the install including designing the side areas for storage etc. Had to wait a month to get them to design and install, went to Sydney from the Gold Coast to ensure I got them installed as designed. Also had them install a 40 litre Stainless Steel Tank behind the draws to ensure we had water with us at all times. Very happy with the design and to have a simple electric tap at the back of the rig works well for us.
As an add on had them design a box with three compartments and a lid to fit in the "fridge" space when travelling without my Waeco 50ltr fridge installed.

Simply idea and has already turned out to be invaluable (as we returned home via the Costco store on Carsula Sydney - $700 later we loaded all our gear in the boxes Yahoo!!) and headed home.

Here are some final pics:

The white arm on the left is a pull up tap with a electric pump supply to the rear of the vehicle
Next step is to install the dual battery system and solar with all wires run to the rear for charging devices etc. plus and anderson plug and separate break cable.

Belly plates (ex ARB) on this week... read about how they are useless but!
Decided against the Ostrich Wing as it will resign my rig to live outside the garage for the rest of its time with us... not a good look!
Have decided on a Foxwing with a Oz tent RV5 hanging off the back of the wing...
Just got the rig back from the panel beaters had to send it back as the work they did was absolute shit! - such a small job and they stuffed it up re mis-aligned bumper bar different colour paint etc.!!!
She is staying home for a while as there always seems to be something to get done to her lately!!

"The Pearl" Build Continued...

Did my research around the Dual Battery system/Redarc/solenoid (for solar) type batteries to use etc.
After long numerous and educational discussions with Redarc and some Auto Electricians - it seemed the BCDC 12/25 was the unit to use plus a Redarc Relay Kit (RK1260) for the Solar.
Was going to get an Autoelec to do it and was convinced by Redarc to use ARB re warranty etc around AU. (prices were similar).
I brought the batteries my self and supplied ARB - brought two - one Supercharge Allrounder D70Z 105AH deep cycle battery - And another Supercharge Allrounder for my crank battery as well!. Had them run a 50amp cable to an Anderson plug at the towbar plus wire in my charge points for fridge/usb/accessories to the rear cargo area.
This week coming is the accessories wiring and my new Awning... decided on the Supa-wing ex Yatala (wanted the Ostrich but cannot fit in garage if fitted ).

The Pearl is coming together nicely Larry. Nice choice with the Supapeg awning. would've gone for that one myself, but it was out of reach of my budget at the time.

Yeah I did lots of research to get the best one for the money Craig... and the convenience was important too - as I do not want to think "argh its too hard to put it all up" and miss out on the joy of having a big shady awning... I also had a major problem in that the one I wanted (the Ostrich) wouldn't allow me into my garage with it on the truck (frame too big)... thus the Supawing - very happy with it now as I have made a few alterations to make it easier.

Nice Rig build up Larry. I went for the OZTent Foxwing and have been very happy with it. We will be teaming it up with an Advernture Kings roof top tent on the drivers side.

I bought a Grande Tigerz11 12000lb winch after a lot of research the value for money and the build quality are very good. The first thing I did was strip out all the grease from everything and replace it with INOX high heat resistant grease and it has worked a charm. Looking forward to seeing the rig in the flesh some time soon. You may see me driving around the GC - Silver Grande with TJM shit everywhere and a Frontrunner roof rack.
07 Silver Grande AUTO, front runner rack, maxtrax, ARB on board compressor, safari snorkel, bushranger roof top pack... and a bit of bling for the back (08 CUB Regal Supermatic Offroad).

Your truck sounds like it is coming along nicely - certainly takes time and effort (and lots of cash) to get them ready!!
Been a bit lazy re adding the things I have been doing to "The Pearl" recently - don't really know why...
Have read a few of the guys who seem to have LOT'S of time here on the forum and am so impressed with not only their "builds" but the discipline to write them up as they go...
anyway I am just going to add the bits I have done since my last entry... and I may alter it and date it a little better when I get it done and finished... (that seems like a VERy strange word to me... a finished 4X4)
Have built a stylised frame for our dogs to travel with us. it sits over the back seat (clears it by about 10" and allows the two black toy poodles we have to see out when we travel - been very well accepted by the dogs they simply do not get car sick anymore!
Fitted my Rechargeable Maglites base and holder on the rear cargo barrier, fitted two fire extinguishers. Had my electrical wiring for my lights driving lights/Roof Rack Bar lights and rear camp/reverse fitted and wired. Purchased 4X tailor made switches for the control of all my lights etc. (Will add some pics soon) ex ebay - great value!
Wiring done by Gold Coast Auto Electrical in Ashmore - (BLOODY GREAT BLOKES) Excellent workmanship and reasonable pricing/timing.My LED lights on this truck are nothing short of amazing - I am so pleased with them. They are all Korr lighting from Yatala, driving/bar/camp/LED's.
Will add some more soon...

Well been to the run a bit finally got setup and headed off to the Cape... the truck went so well. We averaged 13.2Lts/100K - (full to the gunnals with stuff as we did't tow anything.
Brought a Rhino Rack Pod for the roof and just kept filling it. We put our RV5 Oz-trail tent in the pod and all the bits for the tent/ensuite tent/dunny/shower etc!!! - worked PERFECT!
Had two brackets mad to fit on roof next to the pod and hold our Maxtrax/shovel/axe.
Altered our SuperWing awning to incorporate the legs in the awning (carrying less "bits"). Now we simply open it and the legs drop down in place!
Made an adapter for the Oztent to Wing so we are able to leave the tent and drive back and "reconnect"
Researching the 3" exhaust and Chip scenario at the moment - brought 3" system ex Berklee in Victoria via 4wd Supercentre $740 for 409 Stainless delivered! Good deal I reckon.
Speaking with Chip torque Nerang re fitting a Chip set to the 120. Will do a two setting (one for towing/one for road use) switch and Dyno for $2K seems to be a good deal! (open for feedback?)
Thats about it for now...
Off to the Caravan Show in Brisbane tomorrow and have a strange feeling it is going to be an expensive trip!!

Just had the 3" 409 Stainless Steel from 4WD SupaCentre system fitted last friday - all I gotta say is WOW!!! what a difference an exhaust system makes.
Paid $745 and $200 to get fitted, then the bloke who fitted it said he couldn't fix a rattle in it (because he had no gas to bend some brackets etc.!!) in his 8 bay workshop!!!. Then went to an exhaust guy (Carline Exhausts in Burleigh Qld) another $180 bucks (not happy Jan!!) and he did a great job - should have used in the first place .
Drove it out of the workshop and haven't stop smiling and saying OMG!!
VERY PLEASED VERY HAPPY with the job. Made a huge difference to the truck. more power, what seem like more torque, and nice powerful note - not intrusive at all!
cheers guys
L
