  • Gumboot's 120 D4D GXL

Well you look back on pradopoint and sometimes you don’t see the forest for the trees. So many good ideas, and I just never got around to a build thread, so about time I do and share ours.

Have built up our 120 D4D just the way we wanted it for camping and 4wding.
At the end of the build and just enjoying it now.

    PP Tag

    Pictures.

    HID IPF spotlights at 4300K.
I find these great for highway driving as the they really through the beam down the road but I think it is time for a Spread beam LED lightbar for the close in 4wding that we do much more of now. Personally i find the the 4300-5000 Kelvin much less tiring for me on long
    drives.

    AJ's Sliders
These have been worth their weight in gold. They have saved the side panels numerous times.

    Foxwing Awning
Its been a great addition. the only negative is the poles don't fit in the awning, so have to be carried in the 4wwd behind the seats. If only the ostrich wing awnings were cheaper.....

AMTS spacer for bigger rear wheels.

ARB Alloy Roofrack, Kaymar shovel and hi-lift jack holder.
The ARB allow rack really has been a godsend for us. We frequently load it up for trips and i find I prefer this to a flat pioneer tray etc as i can use the top rail to secure the loads easier. And it is not very noise as well. Just my personal preference.

Rear LED lights for camping and reversing.
Dual 2 x 10watt CREE Led lights wired into the panel in the dash . Great for setting up camp in the dark or just reversing in low light.

Dual battery setup. I have since changed the setup. Now running a optima D27 yellow top as the start battery and i notice it has a lot more starting grunt ( higher CCA) and maintains its charge better

105 AH Aux Fullriver AGM battery and circuit breakers and some custom brackets i made up to mount the breakers to .

The standard horn was just rubbish, So i replaced it with a Siebel Air horn. Very loud. An incredible difference.

PWR Transmission cooler and fan, with a custom bracket I made up.
I fundamentally disagree with Toyota reasoning of hot they are willing to let the transmission get to before the Over temp transmission light comes on AND the fact that they say you don't have to change the TOYOTA WS fluid as it is good for life.
I have a Scanguage on the Prado so can monitor the transmission temperatures. On a hot summer day crossing Moreten Island on middle track in soft sand, i saw my transmission temps reach 132 degrees Celsius. OUCH! To me this was just too hot. The normal transmission temp was about 88-89 in normal driving.
So after some measuring and speaking to PWR, i picked up one of their PWR transmission coolers and high volume fans. I welded up some custom brackets to clear the radiator and bolted it all in with some insertion rubber to stop the vibrations.
With the new PWR coooler ( and no fan running) , it has dropped my transmission temps to 67 degrees on average, so about 22 degrees from standard. I never now have it over 100 even when 4wding.
I really don't think you need the Fan unless maybe you are doing some very low speed strenuous 4wding with basically no airflow. With Fan it takes it down about another 5 degrees and it is more noticeable in low speed verses on the highway where you have the airflow already and don't need the fan.

    Avenger Mako Winch
After reading a lot of winch reviews. the Avenger, now KingOne had some great reviews.
Overall i have been happy with it. I's a winch, it goes in and out....

    Baintech rear power panel
This is a great addition a neat way to get power to the back with several conenctions, a voltmeter and amp meter.
Post Edit - The Ampmeter gauge has since died and now it only read volts. ( and 24amps constratly) Baintech didn't want to know anything about it.
But the panel otherwise has been great

Inverter and fire extinguisher. (since) relocated.
I had also run a power board up onto the Inside Cargo barrier to give me 4 x 240V PowerPoints for charging laptops , radios etc. ( if i cant charge them with 12v first.)

Blackwidow draws, divider, top shelf, arb fridge, 57 litre water tank and pump
One of the single most useful things for us camping has been a well setup system in the back. Draws make a massive difference in storing things in designed places and making them easy to get to. The cargo barrier, divider and shelf, means you can basically stack to the roof safely. I love the blackwidow kit, so well made, shame they have gone bankrupt.

    Water tank and pump
The water tank is also very useful, carrys ~60 litres and tucks in the form factor of the cargo barrier so doesn't take up too much room.

TrekTable. Many a baby nappy has been changed on this!
Also great for prepping a meal when you don't want to get a table out.
Once of my tips , is to hang your tea towels when camping here , so they are out of the way, easily accessible and dry fast.

Rear door LED light. Brilliant for camping.
A couple of years ago i saw a light that brains had put in and looked the business. So I credit him, i have been using it for about 3 years and it is one of the most useful things when camping. I have hidden a discrete switch to to run it , next to the door handle

      The switch

Sandgrabba matts. Have been fantastic for us.
If you have kids or go to the beach get these. Enough said.
They would be one of my first purchases for a new 4wd.

MSA Seat covers. Have worn exceptionally well and comfortable
IFfyou have Kids, get these. Very hard wearing and great for messy kids like mine.

Where i put the rear airbag valves. Hidden and not able to be tampered with when the door is closed.

The interior setup. RAM iPad Air mount, Headunit, TyreDog TPMS, UHF, Phoneholder

A tight squeeze with the baby and toddler seats when we take the three kids.

        GME UHF.
These are small and discreet so easy to find a home. This is the secondary UHF now

Putting all the switches in one bank to neaten it all up.
We organised these laser etched switches with Hazza, a but now a couple of years later i see you can get OEM Prado 120 switches which i would probably get instead as they now look factory but i dont mind these still

MSA Seat Organizers, brilliant for camping and taking all the kids stuff.
Very useful for sunscreen, handheld UHF, torches etc.

        MSA seat covers

Yes, I have used the digoptions unit, (http://stores.ebay.com.au/DIG-Options) like many here on the forum. It is a cheaper unit, some have had a few issues, most have been fine it seems. They are slack on map updates for the GPS but as a basic unit for radio/ MP3/ Rear vision camera etc it works for me well . Yes all the steering wheel controls work
                  Cheers

After getting a branch through the gap in my radiator shroud on a recent 4wding weekend away ( and just missing the vital organs) I replaced the stock plate with AMTS one, which closes this gap up and is much stronger alternative to the current one
As arrived nicely packed with foam.

The size thickness difference between stock (right) and the AMTS Plate ( left) . Notice the boxed sections for the tow hooks which actually reinforces it as well

All fitted up, with AMTS plates below it as well. Andrew- Great product and manufacturing.
                    Top work for supporting us.

                    Cheers

Time to install the Second Fuel filter under the bonnet.
I disagree with Toyota that the under bonnet filter does not need replacing, we know what water and contamination can do to a diesel.
First job was to replace the original Toyota diesel filter with a new one as it makes no sense have a fresh secondary filter and a dirty primary one in my mind.
Straight forward job, undo the mounting bracket, get access to filter, remove the bottom two screws on the water trap guard and unscrew the water trap. Have a container to catch the excess diesel in place. Unscrew the filter, coat the o rings on the new filter, screw it back on firmly, screw in the water drain and guard, remount. I take the outlet hose off the filter and re prime with the top pump. Takes about 40 pumps, until diesel flows and re apply the hoses. Clean, start and check for leaks. all done.

Then installed a Racor R230R filter before the main filter. This fits perfectly into the AMTS bracket that i used.
I used R9 EFI hose, quality fuel fittings and good stainless hose clamps etc.
Once it is all fitted up, undo the silver vent plug on the top of the Racor, unscrew the priming pump and prime the filter . Takes about 50 pumps for diesel to come up out of the vent plug, rescrew the primer back in place , and close up the vent plug, clean any excess diesel and you all done.

                      Finished job

You should examine the diesel out of the replaced filter.
I had some small particles in it i noticed, so as good practice i normally cut open the filters to inspect as well

Inside the filter it was quite clogged up.

                      Cheers
