  • Hi Jamie, Long time no hear, sounds like you have the right Prado. Some time the older beasts are better. Good to hear alls well with it. We will be heading out with the pop top soon as our dry season is fast on the way. Plenty of Nomads here already, so will have to get working on the locker kit. Take care Bill.

      • Hi Rusty, I had a look at your circuit, looks impressive, but Im sorry it doesn't do much for me at the moment. I do wish I knew a bit more on the auto electronics side of it all. Not to worry I will try to work it all out. Thanks for trying mate. Take care and cheers Bill

        • Yes it can have its advantages Bill, having an older (simpler) beast. Good luck with yours and getting out there to use it. Mixing it with the grey nomads should be fun!!! Have to get back to Darwin one day, was there in 2013. It had changed since 1979......
          Cheers, Jamie

          • Is it possible just to get the tranny ecu remapped?

Reprogram so it comes in at 85 in 4th for example

            • You could have the ecu re mapped. Cost would be a lot more than building a kit, but easier.

We used a 12 ohm 50 watt resistor to give 1 amp for the solenoid in the gearbox and a 6.8 ohm 100 watt for the ecu return signal. The pic has a 12 ohm 25 watt resistor.

Trav is doing a better circuit and will post hopefully later today. I will also try to get a pic of the aluminium plate i used to mount the resistors on.

Pic of the plate with resistors. This was taken with a usb camera. I mounted a spare resistor if one failed. This plate (100 x 100 )is mounter on the side next to glove box using a 6mm screw into a spare thread on the side.

                Rusty.
Hey Rusty what voltage does the lock up solenoid require.
I thought it had been stated as 5 volts.
Is the resistor set up you have working ok.

PWM (pulse width modulated) is coming from the ECU.
We are giving it 12 volts over a 12 Ohm 50 watt resistor mounted to a aluminium plate for heat distribution. It is not necessarily the voltage that matters, more the current. We had used a 25 watt resistor but was concerned with the heat (+80 deg C) so went to a 50 watt aluminium cased resistor.

Yeah but the resistor will bring the voltage down relative to the current draw of the solinoid. So for argument sake your battery voltage is 13.5 and the solinoid draws 1 amp with a 12 Ohm resistor in series the voltage across the solinoid would be around 2 volts. Is this sounding like what you have.

                    • Its the originator back.
Have retired (sold) the Prado, and upgraded to a 200series. Pleased to report my lock up was still working perfect when it left. No ill effect on the tranny.
The 200 already has a lock up kit, by me (Richardson auto electrics S.A.). I thought the 120 series was bad in the changing, but the 200 is 1000 times worse. The lock up fixed that, mostly.
Anyway, looks like you guys are really getting it together with the 5 speed lock up, well done.
I won't have any more to report but will look on with interest.
                      Regards, Jamie

                        Hello boys,
Been reading through this thread and it's a bit over my head, my 120 Kd 5 speed towing the van could do with a lockup in D , any one doing this in Perth that you know of ,
                        Cheers Alan.

                        • Hi Dabeanian, me too. I haven't got the time or the 12 volt lectric brain to do one either. Doesn't someone out there want to make a few bucks for pocket money. I was just coming back from Darwin this morning and was listening to the tranny slipping up and down in the 80kph zone in town and thought about the lock up kit again. I don't mind paying for one. OK take care and cheers Bill.

We're on our way to Darwin now now from Perth, finding D slipping and revs going up but not changing down to 4 but doing so myself and then the revs go to 2500 at about the 90 mark rather than the 2200 in D and slipping ,
Got some miles to go before we get back to Perth but gonna look into it then, we are towing a van mind you just over the 2 tonne.
                            Cheers Alan.

                            • Interesting mod. I was looking at getting the wholesale autos lockup kit but they told me I cannot use it on the sand which is where I was getting the heat build up from the torque convertor the most. Does anyone know how to safely run a lockup on the beach/sand?

                              cheers,

                              • Those without the TC lock please use 4th gear when towing. The water increases to 96deg when locked in 5th and unless you have a scangauge the dash temp meter barely moves. Using 4th will allow the TC to lock via the ecu and save overheating both the box and engine. The engine temp drops back to 89 in 4th at 100kph.
