    Thanks for that info Rusty. It's good to know. I think we might be safe from that one then. The old 4Spd is very soft at holding the TCC lock ON. They probably need lockers more than the 5 Spd.
    My gut feeling is that Toyota are just being a bit lazy with their ECU code. There's probably more to check etc with the lock ON, so it's much easier for them to have it off when in doubt.

    • Thanks for that Jamie. Terrific! It sounds like you will clock up that next 300k km pretty quickly the way you are going. As such you will be the test dummy. We will look out for your reports.

      • Test every day so far but only on the highway for 15 mins at a time. Works great. No heat in the relays but I would imagine they get bit hot. Mounted on a 100 x 100 aluminum plate and bolted to the side of the car near the glove box.

        Next prototype will be made on the weekend and installed for Easter test. Should be a 1000 km test.

        More after Easter.

        • Measured the heat in the resistors, just under 50*C.

            Awesome. Are they porcelain or metal finned? If metal finned have you tried adding some Unick compound between resistor and surface? Might even bring it down further

              • Box with LED's installed yesterday. One led is to show what the ecu is doing with the torque converter. You would be surprised just how many signals are sent to the converter.
                On motor start - locked.
                From park to gear, locked then unlocked.
                Between gear changes - half lock - unlock - half lock.
                Slowing down, lock until under 40 kph or so.
                Downhill - sometimes locked some times not.

                The between gear change is neat, makes for smoother changes compared to full lock.

                Strangely you can lock the converter at idle and not stall the engine ?????????

                • Few bugs in our latest version. Need to address the load for the ecu when over ride lock on.

                  Other than that the lock worked well, being able to lock in 3rd when climbing has added a gear ratio not available before, and locking in 5th reduced temp in the box and converter.

                  • Hi all, I know this is an old thread but does this cut out the "takes forever to change from 3rd to 4th after kick down on a hill" problem? Im new to auto 4x4 as I have upgraded from a falcon and the wife owns a manual diesel vitara, thanks in advance

                        Simmo. What year and model. The 120 I have is slow at the up change 3-4 sometimes depending on the hill. The lockup helps keep the revs down.

                          Hi mate, I have a 07 model and have the same problem when towing pop top van. Mine is mainly from 4 to 5th. If it doesn't change up when I want it to, I just move the stick back and forth between 4>5 and tell the computer what you want it will change up. I watch the tacho a lot when towing and can see what its up to. Hope this helps. Works for me. Cheers Bill.

                            • Hi all Delicar here and my car is an 03 120 4speed diesel with 189 ks on it, anyway I have been following this blog with a great deal of interest and have included some of my opinions in some of the earlier posts, well last Friday I bit the dust and installed my own home made locker consisting of one change over relay and a switch with LED lights in it showing on/off which is stuck to the gear lever within the comfortable thumb reach zone.
                              The reason I went with this simple manual method is because I am driving the earlier model car which doesn't have the computer problems of the 5 speed models which the gurus are currently trying to address and besides in this case I reckon that the best on board computer my car has is ME so with this simple system I have perfect and very easy control over the shit gear box these cars have been blessed with.

                              Prognosis
                              For some unknown reason the missus and I decided to go and visit my mates dairy farm some 150 ks out of Adelaide and this involved a trip of about 50 odd ks through the Adelaide hills then the rest is flat, well what a buzz the old PLAY DOUGH as we call it is a completely different car, locked up and cruising thru the hills with out revving and roaring it's silly head off and the two times it changed back to 3rd whilst in cruise it didn't hang on to 3rd for ages before changing up, all in all I'm very impressed with the set up and the change it has made to the car and keep in mind that I am treading very carefully at the moment on how much and when I use it (evaluating) how ever time will tell, today I was driving around the local area effortlessly cruising at 60 ks on 1300 rpm locked up only unlocking for corners and roundabouts the big test comes next week when I head off towing my Cub camper of 1200 kgs and will have the car loaded up to the teeth over to the West up to the North and back to Adelaide in September for the start of the good weather, this is a trip of some 10.000 odd ks so I shall keep you all posted.
                              For anybody contemplating going down the same track as me it was the second plug down on the ECU and the pink /blue traced wire was the 4th one down on the clip side
