  • Massive Fuel Consumption 1KZ-TE 04 Grande

    Hey Guys,

Just wanted to get some info about fuel consumption for a 1KZ-TE, On startup first thing in the morning, it struggles to crank over and when she does fire the is a massive white cloud of smoke that dumps out the exhaust. atm around town the computer reckons that its doing 13.2L/100kms and once on the freeway it jumps all over the shop 8.2 - 19L/100.

Could it be as simple as replacing the injectors, car has done about 193,000kms, could a return line be blocked and it's just dumping extra fuel... Im sort of mechanical minded but don't know as much as you guys.

basically atm i chewing thru between a 1/4 to half a tank to drive 180km each day to work, which is crazy.

Its always serviced every 5000km being most of my driving on the freeway, power is all over the shop to, some days i can climb hills around 100 and other days it's about 80kms...

Should i take it to toyota and get them to fix it or take it to a specialist.

I look forward to reading your replys

    Cheers 04 Grande

Take it to a diesel specialist. That's all toyota will do so cut out the middle man.

I would say a specialist if you know one that has a good rep. @193k I would say its highly likely you are due a new set of injectors and glow plugs would be worth a look and probably change.

First of all though what's your air filter look like? that's certainly the cheapest easiest place to start.

      Cheers Andrew

Trying to help. If you don't know how..get a person to clean the air intake on the throttle body. Mine was covered in EGR oil mist/gunk.
Clean the MAF sensor and the MAP filter. Again mine were caked.
Like AJ said change glowplugs and...maybe injectors if needed. This is a good starting point and will give you a little extra HP?! These vehicle's are getting old now and need a bit of TLC! Thanks

          There's no MAF sensor on a 1KZ.

Oh well these two then, I was there too!!??

The intake air pressure sensor and the intake air temperature sensor. Both are located on the intercooler, one at the front passenger side and the other, the temperature sensor mounted in the pipe that connects to the throttle body, that brass looking one.
For diesel engines lacking power try installing a new air filter and making sure there are no air leaks in any of the pipes including the turbo. The next thing to look at is compression by getting a compression test done. Compression figures are as follows : Pressure at around 250 RPM. Standard for the 1KZ-TE is 3040 kPa. Minimum is 1961 kPa. Maximum difference inbetween cylinders is 490 kPa.
If this all comes in range then replace your injectors and while you are doing the job, replace your glow plugs.
Also the pump may need an overhaul, but the above is where you start when you are looking at the problem you have. Obviously, it's hard when the vehicle is not in front of you, so this is general information. Also check for fault codes on your dash cluster. Another thing to look at is what sort of smoke (emissions) is coming out of the exhaust. A lot of black smoke means over fueling. This is usually an injector problem but it also can be the pump.
A lot of vehicles I look at with this problem in the Toyota brand, comes down to the air filter and the housing being choked full of dust and the air filter not being cleaned on a regular basis. Also the oil should be changed every 5000 kms with the oil filter.
            The Roo.

I would think you have a dead injector that is probably sticking sometimes and sometimes not. So sometimes its just squirting unatomised fuel straight into the combustion chamber and other times its not.

The white smoke at start up is a dead giveaway that its not burning correctly. I would find a diesel place to fit new injectors and glow plugs. Parts should be around the $500 and labour prob 3 hours.

Get them to do a wet and dry compression test at the time and you will have all bases covered.

You need to do this yesterday. If its got a dribbling injector you can actually dribble enough into the combustion chamber over night to hydraulic lock the engine and kill a piston/conrod.

              Best of luck.

If it is injectors, find a straight empty road and floor it through the gears until you run out of revs and gears. A flat or slight downhill is better than an uphill for this because you want it to rev out (to flow as much fuel as possible). Most likely you are going to see a huge plume of smoke behind you. If a fuel line or injector(s) are blocked or have some build up, this might clear them a bit. Although, from what you have described I'm not sure that it is a blocked injector...

                What is your location?

                    Hey Guys,

Thanks for the info much appreciated, all of the information sounds pretty interesting and will investigate....

I have tried giving it a boot full and tried the old blow the cobb webs out approach, didnt change much, there was lots of smoke thou, no black from what i could see, but it was definately alot of exhaust.

Definately need to get this sorted asap... I will source a good diesel mechanic... im based on the central coast about an hour north of Sydney.. so if anyone know s anyone good that would also be a great help. Hoping that its going to be as simple as replacing injectors and glow plugs etc.. will check the senors and clean the throttle body and manifold.

Any other details or help would be much appreciated

                    Cheers
