It’s a pretty cold, wet and miserable day here in Adelaide today so not much is getting done. At the moment the mercury is sitting on 12 degrees which is unusually cold for this time of year to say the least!

What better time to sit down with a hot drink and start the rig build up post I’ve been meaning to do for the last seven years (Joined as “MickL” Feb 2007!) And besides, the old girl is being considered for retirement so better get this done before she’s gone to a new home.

Now I’m short of some photos and being out in the rain today to take some doesn’t appeal a hell of a lot! So please excuse the first couple of profile shots that were taken a couple of years ago, but you get the idea, nothing has changed much visually except the suspension has changed to near four inch lift (From what is a two inch OME kit in pics) and also she no longer sports her factory side steps which are rock magnets.

I’ll start in the engine bay, only because I have an up to date picture and what better place to start than under the hood!

Now the engine in question is a 1kz Turbo diesel, backed by a 5 speed manual gearbox and you may cringe but I bought it on purpose in spite of the 1KD being shortly available at time of purchase.

Why the 1kz? Well for me it came down to the fact I know this engine well and can work on it with my eyes closed. Which makes it very suitable for our solo vehicle style of travel.

Of course this engines a bit of a dog power wise especially in a vehicle the size and weight of a 120 Series Prado so some modifications were in order early in the piece.

Starting at the airbox; the pre spinner has been removed, all edges radiused and a Finer Filter installed.

The restrictive intake hose has been replaced with silicone hose and the resonator box removed.

A CT16V intake has been fitted to the turbo.

The throttle plate has been deleted, and the EGR disabled. Also a catch can has been fitted.

The intercooler has been fitted with a fan that is controlled by a frequency switch running off the ECU speed sensor.

A shuttle valve style boost controller is fitted which prevents waste gate creep and I run 18psi of boost.

A 3 bar Denso MAP (boost) sensor is fitted to defeat the fuel cut and a Dtronic with modified fuel map helps the ECU run the show.

Exhaust exits via a HTC coated dump pipe and Beaudesert exhaust system.

Other engine bay goodies include and ARB air compressor and Optima cranking battery. The second battery is a 130AH SSB controlled via a DB180 Piranha controller.

Sitting in the workshop but unfitted is a larger intercooler, current Hilux scoop and yet to be modified intake manifold.
Also the Dtronic is unsupported by anyone these days so a new chip would be nice to allow a new tune, the current tune is only for the exhaust.

Fuel economy is still flat 11’s despite the outside kit and my driving style which is less than economical!

              Great setup so far

How much difference do you think removing the resonator from the air intake made?

Can you give a bit more info on the turbo upgrade i.e. why the CT16V, why only the intake, was it a straight bolt on, difference it made, etc?

You appear to have put a lot of attention into the details.

Can you explain the intercooler fan setup some more. I was contemplating this, and my thought was along the lines that its speed should be dictated by the cars speed - and then I read your post and it appears to be exactly that.

Removing the resonator by itself probably wouldn't make any noticeable difference, for me it was removed by default when changing the factory intake to the larger silicone pipe shown in the picture.

The intake elbow of the CT16V turbo is about an inch larger in diameter so I was able to use the biggest size silicone hose I could.
It shares the same gasket and bolt pattern as the CT12B one but does take some other modification to fit; because of the lack of space when the larger elbow is fitted, the dip stick needs a minor modification of its mounting bracket and the crankcase breather needs re-plumbing. A custom bracket is also required to hold the coolant lines.

                    The difference in intake elbows:

The factory intake hose on the 120 is very restrictive once you start getting more out of this engine, this is mostly due to the drop down in size as it enters the turbo and that horrible 45 degree kink in it. But obviously the smooth internals of the silicone are technically better flowing too.

The difference, always hard to say because there are other modifications in play; You get more intake noise, my fuel economy dropped,EGTs dropped.
It's not a very expensive mod to do either maybe $100-$150 depending on where you get your parts. I got the elbow new out of Japan for around $70 and the Silicones pipes for around $40 from the UK. The clamps and alloy joiner I had lying around already.

                      Hi Mick,

Yes you are right, all very simple really; The fan is off Ebay ($20-$40 depending on how flash you want to go) and it's controlled by a frequency switch. I got this from Jaycar in kit form for under $40 from my memory. Obviously you have to buld it! but it's straight forward and takes no more than maybe an hour once you get started.

This switch can monitor any pulse/frequency signal (without any effect on it) and control a relay based on a set point of your choosing. It also has a hysteresis setting.
I run my fan from 0 to 65 kph, I have the hysteresis set to come back on at around 45-50 kph on deceleration. Not running all the time obviously limits unnecessary current draw and increases the life of the fan

For the price it's a great little modification. Makes a bum in seat difference in reducing heat soak induced lag when moving off from a standstill.

                      Mick

That all came about with the retail membership. Still got the MickL account but it all got too hard switching between so I just stick to this one.
