My car is at Toyota atm for its 70,000km service. I explained to them the engine has a cold start knock which sounds like its full of marbles at around 1900 to 2000rpm. I explained that it had been into Toyota a month ago for a cold start check... all values were ok. I asked the service manager to not just rely on a computer but to take it for an actual drive and listen to what's going on.

Long story short they called back today and said I was 100% correct, that there was a problem. He said cylinder 2 was the issue. They had to recalibrate the ECU. It needs to do a relearn. Its on a trial for the next 2000km and if it falls back to the way it was then they will replace the injectors. He said its called a pilot relearn.

    Hope this helps!

Pilot relearn, injection quantity relearn, all the same. This is usually only done if something has changed about the fuel system, even replacing the fuel filter this can be used. All it really does is wipes the computers learnt values and resets it to the factory values, so the computer can start relearning again.

See how it goes, it may fix it.

Worst case they agreed to replace the injector. Question, should they replace all injectors or only the faulty one?

Is it an old wive tale that disconnecting the battery and connecting +ve and -ve terminals also wipes the computers learnt values and resets it?

I was thinking in terms of the auto shift pattern but would this reset the fuel system also?

You would have to leave the battery off for a fair while on a modern car. It worked fine back in the ea/vn days, but modern computers store the data for longer without power. Best way is to get it done properly with a scantool of some description. Where you get it serviced regularly should be able to help you out

Had the cold knock for 9months now, injector readings o.k. Had the injectors tested at Toyota "all within spec", hence Extended Warranty would not cover the replacement. This indicated to me (and the workshop indicated that too) that injectors are to be replaced on warranty if out of spec. My warranty expires end Oct/2016 so I will drop by the workshop in the not too far future. When I indicated that injectors may go out of spec quickly and the insurance may have to cover for a much larger bill, the response was "They are willing to take the risk".

BTW had my ECU replaced and before that "flashed' with no effect on the cold rattle. Just for the records.

Agreed and I think that's why 'they' say to connect +ive and -ve terminals as this completes the circuit (sans battery) and will exhaust the power retained in any capacitors?

The risk in doing this though is something I dont know, perhaps LeighW or drivesafe would comment?

Modern flash memory doesn't need power - just like a USB memory stick. You would possibly have to wait months or more before the memory is erased.

Disconnecting the battery can fix issues sometimes.
The spec on the 1kd is 2 minutes.
It does not say to, but I use the brake pedal to drain capacitors etc.

A pilot learn Is a complex procedure & disconnecting the batt is not that.

Well I think Eileen is that at the 100k support they should have examined the device approval, its aspect of the support so that should be identify on, unless of course they did not do it.

Hey guys just took the readings on mine yesterday. All looks well but thought I had best check I am not missing something.

                            - 150 GX 2012
                            - 150,000kms (which is why I thought I had better test)

                            1) Feedback VOL looks high both cold and warm
                            2) Injector #1 looks like its running low

Anything else I should be looking for?
