So I'm sitting on the side of the highway waiting for a car trailer to come pick up me and my prado. Drivg along happily, 100km/h towing about 1.5 tonne of trailer and it started blowing heaps of grey smoke out the exhaust, still seemed to be driving ok. Pulled over and it was idling really rough so shut it down as quick as possible. Trying to restart its hard to start now.
Hoping for the best, but expecting the worst.
    It's an 08 D4D with 174000km
Had injector feedback values checked 10,000km ago and all well within spec.
    No rattles
No previous sign of white smoke (on start up etc)
Oil Pick up screen checked and clear at last service (just under 5000 km ago)

Got the guroo lined up to look at it tomorrow so holding my breath for the prognosis.

Hate to say it but sounds like one that let go on us at work a few years ago, only difference was that one was an '08 model with only 60,000 kms on it. Toyota replaced the long motor at their cost as it was obviously still under warranty. They mentioned that No. 3 piston had let go and destroyed the bottom end, but sounded more like injector issues to me....
        Common sense isn't that common.....

Sorry to hear that mark..... I hope the check by the mechanic tomorrow is not all bad..... Can't believe Toyota have done nothing here in aus in regards to recalls, etc.... With the number of the D4D's out there, this could come back at them in the BIG way..... People loosing their faith in Toyota reliability...

Toy Aus still got their heads in the sand (I was going to say up their ar...) over this issue. Talked to the service guys at Broome Toyota about the issue and told them my story. It was like talking to a wall. They behaved like they had never heard of the problem before. Maybe, if they keep their collective heads in the sand (up their ar..) long enough then the problem will go away.

Update: injector values are out of tolerance on cylinders 2 and 3 (injector 3 reading a value of 5!) these same injectors were perfect just under 10000km ago. Suspect that contaminated fuel has caused the injectors to fail. injector 3 failed catrostrphically dumping mass fuel into the cylinder causing hydraulic lock and there is assumed damage to the piston, cylinder 3 has NO compression (other cylinders are within spec)
awaiting insurance assesment and praying like a born again Christian that they approve it and cover the damages.

Stressful couple of days for us lately.

What sort of insurance have you got that covers mechanical breakdown? Or is it extended warranty?

GIO who we are insured with state in their PDS no cover for incorrect fuel use ie petrol in diesel. On speaking with them last year when we had issues with our Mazda CX5 diesel, [which ended up covered under warranty] about insurance cover they were ok with a claim for contaminated fuel, A work colleague also had issues with his L/R TD6 and GIO footed the repair bill.

Onus is on you to prove the fuel contamination, i.e. send sample for analysis, prove where you bought the fuel etc.

WOW mark, thats not good news

I assumed u filled up at your local Servo b4 heading down?

Once all repaired, I'd be looking at installing an AUX Fuel Filter for added protection (unless u already have one......)
