  • My D4D died

My wife rang today with the news that the car broke down. We have a 08 VX diesel that has about 195000km on the clock. Toyota haven't got back to me yet as to what it is but, from what I hear it sounds like injectors. The car was running fine then shutdown after the oil light came on. The car now fires and coughs and bangs then dies after a couple seconds.

Does anyone have any input on this as I'm left in the dark wondering how many thousands this car will cost me when I wanted to trade it in soon on a new one.

Why would the oil light come on when the oil level is fine.

Would I be better off replacing the only ones not working and trade out?

    Regards Mitch

Clogged oil pick up screen? Isn't that an issue with these?

Let us know what the damage is after the mechanics have had a look.

If the oil light comes on and the oil level is fine, then I would guess there is not enough oil pressure.

Wait until you hear from the mechanic, no point in second guessing what's going on IMO.

Will let you guys know how it goes, I hope it's not a clogged oil screen but it doesn't sound good.

While I agree there is no point worrying until you know what has happened there are a couple of threads in this section about D4D injectors and blocked oil pick up screen. It will take a while but have a read and understand the problems others have had.

If the oil light came on the engine was likely starved for a while.
Especially not good for a diesel.
No point worrying, it is what it is, but 99% chance your up for a new engine. Sorry.
The danger of owning on of these strikes again, it is real peeps.
But you all here know what to do to keep an eye on it.
Sad for the everyday joe that didn't know about Prado websites, as far as I know it's the only way to find out about it, pre bang! Big Thankx to roo for that! His threads are the wake up call.

And another one's gone, another one bites the dust.........

Quote Toyota: "There isn't a problem with the D4D warranting a recall."

Engine is wrecked, I'm a bit sick in the stomach. Toyota dealer quote for "partial engine rebuild".

$22,600. I'm better of using it for a Bon fire than spending that on it. A "preloved" motor is about $7700 so I might go that option.

After 3 landcruisers/prados and me being their biggest fan I feel betrayed that this problem that seems so common can be easily prevented if customers were atleast told.

$22K for a rebuild? Are they serious? I know it's cliche' but tell 'em they're dreamin'!
Did they explain what caused it? What could have been done to prevent it?
Sorry to hear your bad news mate, I sincerely hope you get things sorted soon.

Yeah I was prepared for like maybe 10 or 12 but 22!!! They say I caused it by not getting the injectors checked and the screen on the oil pump is blocked. I just can't believe that this is happening. And to think I was going to spend 75 on a new VX. Won't be from there. I might be a nissan bloke soon.

Can you get that in writting from them?? "It was caused by injectors and screen getting blocked". It's an easy win in the courts for you. Who the hell is responsible for letting their customer know that their design was faulty hence regular sump checks are required?? It's not written in your service book hence it's Toyota's fault!

I would not be paying a cent and reading some material on this website how others have won court cases against Toyota for the exact same thing.

Should have been picked up by Toyota not once, but twice. 80K km service dictates that they should have pulled the injectors to do valve clearance...

Point that out to them, and get them to prove that they did in fact do this.

Assuming you have owned the car from new, and had the servicing done by Toyota: Chase them down.

There is no way it is an owner's fault when the 'problems' are not detailed in the service schedule nor carried out by the service department.
