I have a 2012 Prado. Last week I downloaded the Owners Manual from My Toyota. I noticed the downloaded manual for my vehicle was 8 pages larger than the manual which came with the car. Haven't found all the differences but here are two related to privacy and Event Data Recording.

I noticed that in my 14 model manual, it notes that certain data is recorded, and will be shared simply when requested by authorities, not necessarily by subpoena or court order. Engine speed, Brakes on/off, Throttle position, seat belt in/out etc
Could be very onerous in the event of an event where there is an injury or where facing prosecution. I would prefer to rip it out or turn it off if possible.

Virtually every car that has an air bag has some kind of recording ability & GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota and Honda have there gurus that specializes in downloading crash information from vehicles.
Is interesting that they now admit it!! ?? ..
Some legality must have forced them to print it to the general public?
Here is a link from 2010 below!
Is That a 'Black Box' in Your Car?

The "EDR" (Event Data Recorder) records mainly
#1 - Vehicle speed
#2 - Engine speed
#3 - Steering angle
#4 - Throttle position
#5 - Braking status
#6 - Force of impact
#7 - Seatbelt status
#8 - Airbag deployment
And I'm sure more information with the vehicles that have all the bell's & whistles fitted!
I'm also sure that directional indicators (Blinkers) are also in there somewhere?
