  • Hey, jumped back on here today and am seeing the pain I had to deal with over the last three years all over again!
Thinking about it, in the last three years my old Prado has had the following:
    Timing belt
    Timing belt idler
    Timing belt tensioner
    Camshaft seals
    Rewired knock sensors
    Intake valley gaskets
    Rebuilt injectors
    Harmonic balancer
    Radiator
    Upper and lower radiator hoses
    Thermostat and housing
    Davies Craig thermo fan
T2 rotors and pads front and rear
    Rebuilt front and rear calipers
    Rear axle seals
upper and lower control arm bushes and ball joints
    Dobinson 2" lift
    Swaybar links and bushes
    Swaybar mount bushes
    Rebuilt steering rack and bushes

Handful of other components and I'm just tuning the motor now with its new GM Delco ecu from a VS Commodore. Been through a dozen MEMCALs now finding the right tune. Getting quite good economy from it but down on power a bit too much. Around town I'm getting between 16-18L/100km compared to its previous 22-25.

Did you replace the radiator hoses purely because of the age
Mine is due for the 3rd time,
      Thanks
I replaced the timing belt, water pump, the 3 drive belts, and the thermostat. I also replaced both idler pulleys timing belt tensioner and the tensioner pulley. I didn't replace the top and bottom hoses because top and bottom hose weren't that old. I didn't replace the bottom transmission cooler hoses or the coolant hose going into the water pump because they're designed to last the life of the vehicle. The only thing I did with those was remove the old squeeze clamps which I really don't like and fit proper screw tightened clamp rings. I bought new coolant obviously too.

You can buy a timing belt kit which comes with the timing belt, water pump, water pump gasket thermostat O ring seal, idler pulleys, tensioner pulley, timing belt tensioner, seals for behind the crank sprocket and cam sprockets.

      • Thanks, is the kit Toyota or non genuine?

        • I bought a non-genuine Dayco one which is considered to be a decent manufacturer of these kits. I spent $520 but that also included a $120 crank angle sensor that I needed to replace and I also bought a $60 torque wrench. So the kit cost $340 through a local retailer which I considered well priced. Considering that you won't pay any less than $800 odd for this work to be done by a workshop it's a good saving. Some of the more brazen rip-off merchants out there will charge up to $1,200 going by some reports on here. That I just wouldn't pay and would shop around for a smarter deal but it's a good saving to do it yourself nonetheless.

Every time you change your oil, oil filter and air filter yourself you're saving about $200 alone when compared to what a workshop would charge.

That's on my list of things to do but may just mount an aftermarket one on the bullbar.

Same here. Did one on my 120 a couple of months ago and improved reception a bit. The one on the 90 stopped retracting years ago but now the mast is also badly bent. Not yet at the stage of jamming a wire coat hanger in it but not far off if I don't do something about it soon. Got the one for the 120 from super cheap for about $15 so cheap easy fix for the 90 will be the same.

                    • I used Gates timing belt, pulleys and tensioner. Considered Saudi but went with Gates

                      • Fitted the new AM / FM aerial today, that was a lot of fun, need tiny hands to get behind the dash, all in now.

as for the Timing belt ive got all the bits genuine stuff.

                        • ive got the dash apart , in the process of fitting a ICOM 450 uhf , its small but rather heavy so the paces that have been used im not to sure how it would go hanging so im attaching it in a more stable position for it

                            • its louder, not a lot though, much better rev range and so much smoother, feels like there is more power, if you don't push it its more efficient as well, ask ############# , hes driven it
