CV boot replacement

Seems like my inboard drivers side CV boot is busted and needs to be replaced. I've searched the forum but havent found a good write up on this job. I'm pretty savvy with tools and following directions so can somebody point me to a thread or video on how to do this?

I've not seen one specifically for the prado, but there's plenty of vids on YouTube showing CV replacement. They're all pretty much the same. It sounds like you're talking about the boot on the drive shaft though, not the CV (which is directly behind the wheel). If it's just the boot, and you're not planning any hardcore driving, then just get a split boot kit from Toyota (or elsewhere). Otherwise, you may as well replace the whole joint while you're at it.

Unfortunately, here in the states, Toyota does not sell the split boot kit. I did buy the repair kit that has both boots, grease and clamps so I have everything I need to do the job so I guess I'll give it a shot....

The split boot kit here in Oz is only the outer boot. The code is 04438-YZZ20. I have actually fitted it to the inner cv. But I had to only partially cut off the old inner boot. I have been meaning to post a guide and how to with pics. It been faultless for twelve weeks and six thousand hard kilometres.

Looks like my passenger side inner CV/drive shaft boot exploded sometime recently, or the seal disintegrated... Either way, I need to get it fixed before dirt works its way in there if it hasn't already. Do you have a rough guide on how you did the split boot? Otherwise if I have to pull the whole shaft off I'm probably going to take it in, spent the whole weekend doing the LCA bushings and don't want to have it all in pieces again anytime soon

Although I think my boot has been spewing grease out for about a month now so I'm tempted to just replace the whole assembly to be safe and maybe get this one reconn'd at a later stage. Make it a side project to pull it apart and see what's really gone on in all my spare time

Looks like drivetech are a fairly reputable manufacturer with a 3 year warranty on their assemblies and I can pick one up for $160 (repco want 300 so who knows what toyo want). Are there any problems with running genuine on one side and aftermarket on the other side? I called the distro and they didn't seem to think so but I trust this forum more

The emotional scarring from changing the LCA bushings has seemingly worn off so I think I'm almost ready for another challenge

The genuine one will be much better quality than any aftermarket one commonly available here. If I was you I would either have yours done up or redo both boots yourself. I would only put an aftermarket one in if there was a failure of one of the joints.
