  • Getting Ready for the Simpson in 11 days. Fitted an awning, mounted an LED strip light into the awning, built some rear shelves and a fridge slide, mounted a shovel on the roof. List is slightly shorter now but not by much.

    • Not today but tried some rattle can clear coat on a carbon wrapped trim piece and I think I'll be doing the rest some time. Looked nice

Awesome, we go in about 50 days, would be interested in your trip report around conditions.
I was thinking of making tear shelves - what did you make them from and how did you fix them in ?

I'll post something up when i get back RE. conditions.

I made the shelves and fridge slide out of ply (17 and 19mm). I have photos of how I did the attachment points below and will post the finished product tonight (didn't take photos of it yet).

Using inspiration from the DIY drawers thread, I got a guy I know to make a couple of brackets that attach into the third row seat mounting point for a start. I put threaded inserts into the plates and bolt the boxes into these.

I took out all of the mounts on the floor of the boot intending on using some of the existing holes as receivers for bolts through the bottom of the new units. To access those points I was going to need to put some slits in the carpet and so ended up drilling a couple of new holes in the floor in easy to access positions. I then used a nut-sert tool to add a threaded insert and make my own attachment point.
bottom hole is my new attachment point

I made the units themselves as two stand alone boxes and have put threaded inserts into the side of one so that I can bolt them together well. More photos to follow.

            • Put it on a diet?

Put the Prado on a weighbridge to get Tare in preparation for my upcoming Simpson Trip. 2430KG - Full tank, Drifta rear drawers, Cargo Barrier, Sovereign Bull Bar, Driving lights, Dual Battery, Extinguisher, First Aid kit, Tow Bar + One baby seat,

I've got to find a 80kg reduction if I want to keep it legal. Though I'm sure water usage and fuel burn will get us below that pretty quickly

                • r4ndll. If you only need the baby seat take the other, double rear seat to save, from memory , about 35-40 kg. Half way there! Makes a good packing spot to boot.

I wish.... There's 5 of us. June last year it was only me, then my wife decided she wants to come, and no one wants to babysit our 3 kids for 3 weeks. Its the water that is the killer but I'm in negotiations to dump about 40 litres in another vehicle.

                      • Been there. Done that with 5 . Don't put the last of the fuel and water in until your last stop. That way you will be under weight till you hit the desert where there aren't too many around to check! 100 km and you will use about 12-14 kg of fuel so you will quickly get down to weight. I did that trip a couple of years ago if you need any info. I am local to you. Neil

That's why many of us sacrifice water for beer and spirits. Got to get your priorities right. After the first week out bush everybody smells the same so nobody will notice you haven't showered recently.
