We may be up that way to Ian as we're possibly heading to Boondooma Dam for the long weekend. Manar Park is not to far from there apparently (as far as the crow fly's anyway.) Might try and get a wheelin fix while we're up there...

          Trip Report

Due to ANZAC day commitments we (me + Val) started our 3 day weekend a day late and headed off from Toowoomba on Saturday morning. After a last caffeine refill at Dalby we headed north and arrived at Manar Park late in the morning. After registering at the main office we dodgey a number of kids on Pee Wees on our way to Middle camp. We set up our main tent and dumped all the rest of our kit in there hoping to be ready for Craigm who was coming for an afternoons fun.
Craig arrived as we had pretty much completed and after a quick G'Day we aired down and set off to explore.

The first run we planned was a medium grade up to "The Lookout".

This turned out to be a pretty easy run and took no time to arrive. Unfortunately the lookout didnt live up to the reputation that its name suggests as there were only glimpses through the trees to anywhere. Better views across the adjacent valley were available at several points on the track up. Next we chose a hard track and headed off into the interior.

Along the way Craig calls over the radio "interesting track to the left"
Me - Want a look? Marked as extreme
C - ok.. and off he goes.

I backed up and followed to protests of "Your not going up there??" from Val. Yep, locker on and up we went, no sweat the locker passed its first test. Some great photo opportunities were missed there as apparently both hands were strangling the Jesus bars.
We followed that track around and came to the descent. Front seat conversation went something like You are NOT going down there! Well he did! No No No!. Hang on. OH Sh!@t.
Back on the original track we continued on exploring a range of tracks and eventually ended up at the Boyne River.

Manar Park trip report part 2

After a quick photo on the bank Craig tried out one of the crossings on the river. The river was all sand but the departure point was a rock ledge. We lined the wheels up on a narrow rock ramp and had a go but first time the rear dropped off the ramp and came to a halt. Craig reversed back until the rear started to bury itself in the river, then a bit of boot and out she came. I opted not to got this one as i only have whats left of the OEM bash plates and they werent goint to stand up to that crossing.

A little further up were a couple of nice sandy water crossings that lead to a couple of swimming holes and we headed up there for a quick look.

Then it was back onto the tracks and after a couple more runs we went back to camp for a cold beer before Craig headed back to Boondoomba. We finished setting up camp and then relaxed with dinner and a bottle of red feeling relaxed after an enjoyable day.

Day 2 and its was Vals turn to drive the tracks. She was somewhat excited but nervous so we started off on the easy tracks which she handled fine. With a little coaching we were soon on the hard tracks and she was doing ok. Only once she balked at a descent which had rocky ledges that I drove down but it turned out not too bad. So after a morning on the tracks we headed back to camp for lunch.

By lunch time nearly all other drivers had left the park and we had the tracks to ourselves. We went for another run down to the river and let our dogs have a good run.
This was followed by a little more exploring and eventually we came across the obstacle course so stopped for a little play.

Then it was back to camp for dinner and drinks by the campfire.

Monday morning was a bit of a sleep in, a lazy breakfast then pack up camp and head home. All in all a very enjoyable weekend.

            My notes on Manar Park
The park itself caters for Bikes, quads and 4WD with the rear section allocated to 4wd only. For the 2 wheelers there are areas set aside for beginners and juniors and there were a number of father / son pairs around.
The tracks were all well numbered so it was easy to work our way around
Track grading appears to be done with an unmodified 4wd in mind so with a lift and locker the gradings seemed a tad severe.
There is a fairly well equiped shop and apart from food and drinks has an array of bits for camping and bikes as well as souveniers.
There are 3 camp grounds. The front camp is in the main 2 wheeler area so is predominantly bikers but this has the only powered sites.
The Middle camp is a mix of 2 and 4wd and has hot showers and toilets but the water is dam water not suitable for drinking
The main camp is in the 4wd area and has a toilet and cold showers.
