I've had a squeal coming from the back when reversing since before the GTG so might have a minor issue. The tyre joint who did my front wheel balance just prior to the GTG (got rid of the annoying vibration at 100K plus) said the pads probably just need chamferring (sp?). The brakes seem to be working fine now but I don't have the tools or skills to check them myself.

Mine haven't been too bad, haven't paid more than $270 for a service on the Kaka so far.

How much should changing the auto trans fluid cost? They tell me it's extra over the normal service charge.

          Shan,
Well done mate and hope you enjoy your altitude. They have some good kit on them so I am sure you will be happy with your purchase. All the best buddy, Tony and Denise. By the way this is the benchmark. Take no prisoners.

Well Piggy & ####, you were right on the brakes. They say the pads are seriously worn and need replacing with a possibility the discs need machining as well. They can't finish that today if they start it so am putting it off till i can get some advice here.

I've also been told they can't change the auto trans fluid as it's a sealed unit. They also tell me that according to the service manual the only requirement is to check the transmission for leaks. Found a thread in the 150 section where a Kakadu owner has done the fluid change so I know it's possible, don't know why the dealership is telling me different.

ETA: Just spoke to Rocket Rod at Wholesale Automatics and he says it's complete BS that I've been told on the trans fluid, the unit has a separate pan and is easily serviceable. Waiting for some info he is sending me via email on some options for sprucing up the transmission too.

Incase you are unaware, I'm a brake specialist, happy to check them out.
Is your out of warranty? Leave auto till it is if they won't do it.

Yes I know you are, that's why I held off on getting my Toyota dealership to do the job.

It's out of factory warranty but is on a dealer's extended warranty, I was never offered the factory extension option (not the original owner).

Auto transmission is serviceable and should be done, according to Rocket, every 20k on mineral oil or 40k if running full synthetic oil. That's what they told me when I got the valve body upgrade on Pearl. Cheers.

That's what he told me too Pearl. How do you find the valve body upgrade?

MMM quick shift. In short I think it is a good thing. The cost however is over the top. If they use your valve body it takes a day to perform the work.

It does nothing for the timing of the change of gears(computer controlled) but it does make it sharp and quick.
I suspect I will not have the overheating issues many have stated in conversation at the GTG and talking to people around caravan parks.
We have also added a transmission cooler to be sure and she runs synthetic oil now.

I did not like the feeling of the sloppy change in cogs in 3rd to 4th high range at 50 to 70kms/hr so very happy now. Sure the A750F box was smooth and everything, exactly what you would expect with a new $60k car but I felt no need to drag out the process of changing gears any longer.

I am also convinced now that an auto may be even better off road than a manual. I was shifting gears in low range that quick up hills that would be suicide in a manual machine. It just hooks up fine under load, if you know what I mean. Going down hill with the TVAN on the tow ball it still holds back on most occasions so that is no different to my old manual Hilux.

                      Cheers,

Well now that I have arrived home the post GTG maintenance has begun.

Only real issue was the gear selection issue. Once we left the GTG we booked into Wodonga to see if the issue could be found. It appears that the gear selector box is not getting a signal to say it is in 1st. Quoted just over $900 for a new box. Prado was fine to drive but just wouldn't be able to lock it in low at all. Not an issue as had finished as the low/low work.

Once home took to local Toyota to get a second opinion and they came to the same conclusion but wanted to charge just over $1000 for the box. Showed them the quote I already had and agreed to match it. New box gets fitted tomorrow.

Ended up with a broken pole carrier on the camper trailer but that happened after the GTG so does not count.

Went round to #############'s today and had him check out my brakes, turns out Toyota weren't telling complete fibs on this one. Fronts were down to about 3mm so while they weren't super urgent they were getting a bit low. Rears down to about 1mm with wear indicators touching and smelling rather burnt, no wonder we were having fun coming down off some of the steeper descents. With the rears so worn you have to wonder why Toyota didn't say anything last service, I can't have worn them down that much in 6 months.

End result was new Bendix 4WD pads all round and all discs machined for a bit over half what Toyota wanted once I factored in the Pradopoint 10% discount offered by #### and I know the work was done right. Thanks heaps ####, very happy with the work! Will pop some pics in my build thread later.

Had a good look around underneath while the Kaka was up on the hoist and it appears the only damage was to the bash plates (mainly the sump guard) and fuel tank guards, the muffler has a few small dents in it as well.

Thankx for allowing me to check it out & for the business
You won't get a better brake job than that!

Yes yet another fuel rank guard required, I don't think I've seen a Prado with a 2" lift on the hoist that isn't smashed up & the customer doesnt agree they need a decent guard there.

I was impressed with your Bushskinz sump guard ####, much thicker than my Ironman one. They didn't do them for the KDSS equipped 150 when I was looking so I ended up with the Ironman ones. Do Bushskinz do a fuel tank guard yet?

Photos from today are in my build thread now.

They are/about to start on fuel tank guards for prados.

Yes the 4mm plate rules, so much stronger than the others even the 3mm is easily bent up.
The electroplating stays looking much better than paint also. No rust!
They have only recently finalised the 150 guard.

I might become a Bushskinz distributor soon so that could be another 10% Prado point discount lol......
