  • 2002tii's US-spec 2005 Lexus GX 470 (120)

Howdy from Texas in the United States! I just recently sold a 3rd generation 2002 4Runner (Hilux Surf) for a 2005 Lexus GX 470 (120-series Prado). The vehicle is a weekend driver (I have a company car for use during the week), but my plan is to very lightly build it up into a comfortable trail/expedition vehicle.

The GX 470 is a 120, but it has a number of differences over your Prados. For one, it has a rear air suspension that can be lowered and raised at the press of a button. As it works well, I'm reluctant to give it up to replace it with conventional lift coils and struts. Luckily, it can be tricked into sitting slightly higher. I think I'm leaning toward Bilstein 5100 adjustable front struts. Aiming for approximately 1.5 inches (~3.8 cm) of lift over stock.

The GX 470 also uses Toyota's 4.7-liter V8 engine, five-speed automatic and full-time 4WD with A-TRAC and DAC. I'm not sure how similar that is to what's under your Prados. My particular GX was further optioned up with the relatively unusual Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, which features oversized sway bars that automatically release when more articulation is needed. It's a trick setup that provides flat on-road cornering but increased off road articulation. The system is hydraulic and actually quite simple. I don't believe it was offered on the Prado, but I may be wrong.

Inside, the GX 470 is, as you'd expect from a Lexus, rather luxurious. The leather grade is nicer, there is additional sound deadening, the wood trim is real, etc. It has a third row of seats and both front and rear air conditioning (this is important in Texas, where summer temperatures are routinely 37+ degrees) I wasn't necessarily after luxury, but I am not complaining either. Mine was, fortunately, not equipped with the cumbersome factory navigation system.

Part of the reason I'm on this forum is because there are so many more mods available for the Prado than for the GX. My GX, like the vast majority of them, was used primarily on the carpool run before I bought it. Virtually none of them have ever been put into low range, for instance!

Anyway, here are some photos of the GX 470 shortly after I bought it recently.

    April 2014
    - Front rotors and pads replaced with OE Toyota parts.

    Planned Work
    - Torn axle boot (front driver's side)
    - ~1.5 inches of lift, one way or another
    - More aggressive rubber
    - Removal of side steps
    - Rubber all-weather floor/cargo mats. Thinking Weathertech, a US brand (frankly, Australian mats look nicer but are only RHD)
    - Aux input for factory audio system. Don't want to lose factory head unit as it integrates nicely to the interior
    - Improved underbody skid plates
    - rocker protection. Will have to be custom as KDSS equipment prohibits me from using any off the shelf units.

I always thought that the Lexus versions were a bit more "up market" than our Prado's.

I'm a bit biased - but have a look at:

    Good looking bus for sure!

The rear air suspension would likely be the same as our Grande. There are quite a few builds here that you should check out. amts, craigm are two that come to mind. Our Grande didn't have KDSS, we had to wait until the 150 for that. You can jump onto the ARB, TJM etc sites and look for bits for an 05 Grande and see what is on offer.

Anyway forget the Lexus, where are the pics of your BMW?

Aussies only get a choice of a 4 cylinder turbo diesel or a V6. I'm sure some would love to have access to the V8

Nice truck to start a build with. Man I wish I had an option of a V8 (diesel though) in the 120 Prado's. Good luck with the build.

Thanks for the welcome. Didn't realize the Grande had the air suspension. Makes sense. I always wondered how Toyota could justify it for just the GX 470.

And the grass is always greener... I'm envious of your diesel! The V8 is buttery smooth and has been returning 17mpg US in mixed driving. That's not stellar, but it is on par with many less powerful V6 4x4s.

I don't have a tii, but I do have a standard carb'd BMW 2002. It's a 73, again a USA spec. I'm the second owner. Typing this from my iPad but will post up pictures of it later (hey, it's Friday night here and I'm on the couch with a beer watching baseball!).

I have a page called "The Lifted Lexus" on my Facebook. Not sure if you've come across it, but its a US based modified Lexus community. Maybe they can give you some pointers and ideas?

Threads on here on the Grande suspension modifications should help you a lot too.
2 inch lift (Or more) can easily be done even with the KDSS.

Yep, I'm familiar with the Lifted Lexus page.

Did the front brakes today. The old pads were certainly serviceable, but there was some steering wheel wobble when braking at speed. Warped rotors. I replaced everything with OEM Toyota parts ordered from Sewell Lexus here in Dallas.

Also noticed that one of my front axle boots is ripped and leaking. Not sure how I missed that before. Guess what project is next?

I've got the same exact vehicle (2006) with the same CV boot issue. I'll be following your build as I plan on doing the same stuff to mine.

                    Mods so far
-changed out wheels for T4R Limited wheels.

                    Planned
                    -brakes (this weekend)
                    -CV boot

                    Future
                    -ARB bull bar
                    -OME suspension upgrade

Nice. Which T4R Limited wheels did you do? I've been so busy lately that I've done nothing to the GX. I've barely even driven it!

They are just the stock T4R limited wheels from a 2008. When I bought my GX, the wheels had a bunch of chips in them and it needed new tires so I scored the wheels on craigslist real cheap and put some more aggressive tires on it. Click image for larger version

Yeah, I like the stock GX wheels, too. The Sport package like mine (KDSS + dark wood trim inside and a few other small cosmetic items) and I believe 08-09 GXs have a darker finish that is nice.

And those 4Runner wheels look great. Are they 18s?
