  • Light truck or standard?

I am looking at getting some MT STZ tyres here in NZ, but are wanting to know if its better to get Light truck tyres or standard?
The option I have is stay standard size 265/65 R17 with Light truck contruction or go up a size which is preferable to 265/70 R17 but is only standard construction.
Views and opinions want please with pros and cons.
    Thanks

    Andrew

LT hands down. better resistance to punctures and higher load carrying capacity.

Lt all the way as you tend to get deeper tread with the stronger carcass. Be careful with carry more weight as your GVM doesn't change because of tyres.

LT definitely the way to go. Are you set on mickey thompsons cause the goodyear wrangler duratrac might b an option if your after snow tyres. Good reviews, comes in 265/70r17 light truck, 80000km warranty and the most important thing, it looks good. :-)

I'm gonna throw a spanner in the works . I've driven mud and a lot of other places with grand treks . I have AT /LTs on my car now and the ride is fair dinkum ordinary . For the record I have never had to change a tyre or even had a puncture with either set of tyres and I've driven some of the hardest tracks in this country , some of the mallee country might be different , but my next set of tyres will probably not be LTs . Just overkill in my opinion , for a ride that makes one of the best riding 4wds ever built , ride like an old crapper , and handle like a turd on wheels . No I'm not writing this to be a troll , or just to be a pain in the arse , or just to get a reaction . I'm going back to none LTs , don't need them . Cheers kav

Must be something wrong with my car - rides nice on and off road. Nicer than stock 150 that's for sure.

I had that same problem deciding what to get, fixed easily by getting 265/65/17 AT and another set of 265/70/17 LT Muddies with some cheap steel rims.

Is it possible to get lighter LT tyres? Going from Factory Grandtreks to the Cooper ATR Light truck I find the unsprung weight heavier and acceleration a tad slower on my Petrol v6. I assume over time this will affect slightly fuel economy. Is there a tough Passenger tyre thats close to light truck?

I noticed my Cooper has 80psi max rating. Any passenger that can go to 60psi?

I wouldn't want to pump any of my tyres to those pressures, it would be bouncing all over the place let alone puncture at the first pin prick. On road I run 44 max if I'm really loaded, around town I run 42, dirt roads around the 24/30 mark depending on the road, sand, anywhere from 10 to 18. Not sure the reason you would want to run at 60 ??? Fuel consumption will suffer if running bigger tyres. Im running 265/65/17's in a LT (same size as factory) so there would be more resistance due to tread design but using more fuel would be minimal for me with keeping the original size. There was a chart some where some one did relating to tyre size and the extra fuel used for different tread design and size. Will see if I can find it....There is different L/T's around some with stronger side wall then others eg 2 ply instead of 3 ply.....Cheers Steve

                          Hi steve

I wouldnt pump them that high anyway. i was trying to use numbers as reference. As in any tough passenger tyres that are light?

                          Thanks Steve

I agree with Steve. I think tread pattern and rolling diameter would have more of an impact on your fuel economy than Lt or passenger design. I'm running 265/70r17 bfg's and don't really notice much difference in acceleration or fuel economy, I know it's there but then I don't run the car down the quarter mile. Plus the benefits far outweigh the small amount extra $ at the pump. Everything is a compromise with tyres it all comes down to intended use. What do you want from your tyres, occasional offroad, beach outback touring then we can start the "great tyre debate" :-)

You didnt notice much difference but there is a difference? I remember the grandtreks being so light and the acceleration was much better. I like you are running 265 70 17 LT now too and I do notice a difference in acceleration (not radically but enough to realise there is a slower acceleration) and the fuel economy has suffered just a tad. Now yes I know its a 4wd over 2 tonnes but the point is if you can do research and minimise extra fuel consumption and get tyres to suit your intended purpose then I guess its a good start

I love the idea of LT as stronger and sturdier etc. My next big trip is cape york in 5 years time so I might switch to passenger as I rarely go offroading. Then when the time comes get some good decent BFG LT all terrain.
