  • What's normal?

    Hi,
    What is normal?
My Prado 150 diesel auto 2013 (new update) is going well but a couple of things I would like your opinions on:-
Raised the following issues with my Dealer at the 1 month check up, but told all are 'normal' but I am not so sure. Car has now done 4000km.

    1. Coolant level (when cold) is always exactly on the 'low' level mark - Delivered that way and hasn't dropped or changed since new.

I expect it should have been delivered and be at the 'full' mark but Dealer says no. Where is your level?

    2. When I put my foot on the brake pedal it makes a noise. Like a 'whooosh' As if going through a bush etc. Brakes feel very good, Brake
fluid is and always has been at the 'full' mark. Just it makes this noise, not super loud but quite discernable. Never had this noise in any
of my other cars -Toyotas included. Does your 150 do this?, or pedal needs lubrication, or replacement, or just normal?

    your thoughts most welcome
    David

My coolant isn't at the Low Level, but, if I were a business and had a tolerance for how much I should supply you with, I would choose the lowest level...

Its hard to provide feed back on the "Whoosh". I do get a sound that's like a "Whoosh" but it just sounds like the brake system doing their thing...

May I suggest you meet a few guys and go for a drive in their rigs, to compare.

my dealers have always had any cars halfway between low and high on the coolant when the engine is cold, this way it has margin to fill or empty during use.

          Hi David,

Whoosh noise is perfectly normal. I have driven 2x work 150 GX Auto's (one was my bosses with 40 thou + kms and the other brand new with 1300km. The whoosh noise was louder in those than my 150 GX manual, but all three definitely have it.

I put it down to a Toyota "quirk" for the power assisted braking.....

David I have a 3 week old Kakadu and it has the whoosh sound from brake peddle as well. I noticed it early on and when I focus on it, I agree it is annoying. Based on other replys it must be normal.

              whooshing noise

the noise could be the electric vacuum pump working

                Hi David,

                1. About 1/2 way when cold. Has been since new, now 2 yo.

                2. Have that noise. Strangely to some it appears, I find it enjoyable and play with brake pedal to get that noise when stationary. In doing so I have found that even with electrics off, pumping the pedal will eventually cause the brake electric motor to start and re-pressurise the system. A safety thing I guess.

                Cheers

I've got whoosh sound on mine, as well, since I got it last year. Looks like norm to all the replies.

Just adding another 'what's normal' question

The oil in my diesel has gone black very quickly. I got the Dealer to change the oil and filter at the 1000 km/1 month Complementary check up.
Only 'Castrol oil 15/40' was stated on the receipt (which type of Castrol oil was used is another matter)
THe Prado has now done an extra 3000 km on the new oil, mainly highway driving -only about 10% would be city driving since the oil change and it is very black.
A friend has bought a new Jeep and done about the same mileage - his oil is dark but doesn't look quite as black though.

I know that it is different to a petrol in that a lot of the contaminants goes back into the oil but I am quite surprised in how quickly it loses its 'new look'.
Makes me wonder about how it will last to the recommended 10000 km oil change. I will though be looking at changing it every 5000 km. Makes you think about other makes who recommend 15000 or 20000 km oil changes.

                    Questions:-
                    1. Is this normal -does the oil in a diesel go dark very quickly? even at 3000km?
                    2. Would a better quality Castrol (or other brand) oil make any difference?
                    3. Could it be possible that they have put in the wrong oil? - oil for a petrol engine instead?
                    4. If I fit a Provent oil catch can will that make much of a difference?

                    look forward to your thoughts
                    David

Diesel oil going black very quickly is pretty normal. I doubt a catch can would make any difference to the colour of the oil, but probably still worth while to keep the intake system clean.

                      Cheers Andrew

They don't change the oil at the 1000klm check unless you ask for it to be done and pay for it? It is literally just a check.

I did ask for it to be changed. I realise it is not recommended but as it is a new engine I just like the idea of doing it like people use to do years ago (for good reason then).
                          Thanks for your reply

Won't make a difference to the color as the diesels make the oil black quickly. This is what was in my catch can after 20,000k's. Glad it's on there.

On your oil going black "problem". I went to an info night a while back on lubricants, one of the guys that talked was a very experienced oil technician, and when asked why some oils go black quicker than others his reply was oils that go black quick are actually doing their job better, being that they remove the carbon contaminants and hold them in suspension. That is the detergents are doing their job and keeping the engine clean and the dispersants are holding them in suspension (the blackness). As long as the oil is still slippery and when you wipe it on to your hand then back off again it doesn't stain your skin it is doing its job great. A engine creates a certain amount of carbon into the oil ways, if one oil stays cleaner than another, I would actually say the cleaner oil is doing a worse job.
