  • Throttle Position Sensor - Rough Cost?

    Hi,

I am new to the forum - just joined up as I am looking for a second opinion on a problem I have with my 2002 TX 90 series Prado.

The engine warning light has started coming on in the last week or so. This seems to happen when the brakes are being applied, and only after 10 or 15 minutes of driving. It usually happens while sitting at a red light or waiting to turn a corner. Often the car goes into limp mode at the same time. Turning the engine off and restarting resets things, but only for another 10 or 15 minutes when the cycle repeats.

I took the car to Toyota, who have told me that they have detected an ECU code indicating that the throttle position sensor is faulty. They have advised that it will need to be replaced and the part will cost me $1,300(!), plus labour. Does this sound like a reasonable cost for this part? Are there any cheaper alternatives worth considering?

    Thanks,

    Dave.

I'm sure you can find plenty in the wreckers for much less...

Can you remove the sensor yourself, if so then you can just clean it, and put it back in and see how it goes. I know that works with the petrol versions, not too sure about the diesel. But it is worth a try.

If you have a part number, I can verify the price for you through my dealer.

That price is ridiculous, definitely try wreckers. Perhaps its even possible to get the same part from another model Toyota?

They are probably quoting you the whole "Venturi" set up (Stepper motor/butterfly assembly/position sensor) There is no practical way to set the throttle position sensor easily to the shaft of the stepper motor in the field so they only sell it as an assembly, pre-set from the factory.

Thanks for all of the responses - much appreciated.

I have verfied the price via a separate quote (~$1,300 is about right it seems) and there are no real 'non genuine' alternatives. As other have suggested, I believe this price includes replacing the throttle etc. as well as the sensor. I have also been told that a throttle position sensor failure is a pretty rare occurrence...

Just to close out this thread, I had the throttle position sensor replaced and it fixed all of the issues I had. Four months on and all is good.

                  Cheers,

                  Dave.

Thanks for letting us know. Did you manage to find an alternative supply or just went with genuine?

You can quite easily pick up a throttle body with TPS, ISC, dampener and throttle opening valve for around the $100 from the wreckers or EBay. If they are exactly the same just replace the whole assembly. There are about 4 different versions acording to an unreliable source, but there at least two, one with the dampener and one without. Also the 1998 camry 3.0L may be a source of parts for at least the 3.4L . I have just purchased one for the throttle opening valve. Ken.
