  • Cracked engine mount report

    Hi all,

I have just found that my Left engine mount support is cracked and has been for a while and reading the forums have noticed a few vehicles have the same problem.

I rang toyota australia and they do not have a bulletin out about this problem, apparently ?

If anyone else has this problem please let me know as I am in the process of having my vehicle inspected by toyota and a report sent to toyota australia. The more people who have this problem identified the more chance of getting it rectified.

Moderators , I understand there already is a thread on this but just wanted a thread to report to toyota.

    Regards

    Darren

Forget sending a report to Toyota. They are already well aware of it and they have a published procedure to fix it. (Trade only, but I have seen the instruction).

Toyota service people are also well aware of it. They all deny it and are telling you porkies and going through the motions and faking concern, investigation, etc.

This is well known in the USA on the Tacoma and was the subject of a recall I believe. There is a supplier in the USA that sells replacement, strengthened support brackets for about $100.00US (one hundred) for a pair. The chassis is popular with desert racers and this is one of the first things they do when building a race truck.

The Toyota fix is to remove the engine, cut a piece out of the chassis rail under the bracket, insert a wedge of steel, and weld it all back in, adding a couple of gussets for strength. Toyota also supply an additional steel plate (free) to weld on top of the support, before replacing the engine mount. Its recommended you get new engine mounts. You will have to pay for these.

Typically the dealer will charge about $2,500 - $3,000. This is for the left side only. More than likely telling you that this is the first one they have seen like this and its never been mentioned at any of the service junkets....oops.... I mean conferences.

If you're handy on the tools and know a good welder, you can get it done for a fraction of the stealership cost.

      Hey Darren,

Out of interest, is your rig a manual? Just wondering if the more constant power of the auto is causing this aswell..

      cheers,
      Josh

You wouldn't happen to know the company or product name of the replacement set from the USA

Here is the best point they said they have a specially made bracket that I have to pay for and here are the instructions for welding the bracket in place. I think the bracket is about $40, expensive work is the welding on the chassis as it has to be certified.

I guess a recall isn't needed until someone is injured.

Don't forget to buy your parts online from amayama.com very cheap, get ripped here in Oz.

Do you have a copy of the repair instruction? I wanted to take a copy but the dealer would not let me.

Also a picture of the bracket?

Interesting about the certification as that wasn't mentioned in my case, nor did I see any paperwork to that effect. I reckon any good welder would be able to do the job. Its only box section steel.

Any idea how you are going to get it done?

The service manager at toyota where I bought the vehicle when new is organising the fix, I will ring tomorrow and get a copy of the instructions and hopefully a picture of the part or part number, I got quoted about $500. Oh what a feeling!!!!!

                    $500???

Is there a zero missing from that?

The Toyota instruction states step one is to remove the engine.

Its possible to do it by removing the diff, but neither scenario is a quick exercise.

I would love to know how they are doing yours.

The mount was repaired without taking the engine out and the supplied part welded in, total cost $340. Happy with that.

Everything you need to know has already been stated in this thread.

On the back of beaujangles fix for two tenths of bugger all, I'm very interested to get more detail and see what the report of yours is.

I don't know exactly what occurred but toyota took it to a chassis repair workshop and welded in the part supplied by toyota for $34 and the rest was labour and they didn't have to take out the engine. Sorry I don't know anymore info.
