  • Just fitted slotted rotors , with pics

    Hello fellow Prado owners
Today I did the 70.000km service on my kakadu V6 and also fitted new brake pads and rotors all round as the originals were worn down to minimum . The car had been a city daily driver before we brought it so it had more than its fare share of stop starts . I also tow a 2.2 ton boat and I've noticed that brake fade happens after hard stops and long down hill ranges with boat on the back. My boat trailer has stupid override cable brakes that are not adequate for its size and weight.. But that's something I'm addressing with manufacture and another story, but the car needed everything going for it to stop !

I've fitted DBA T2 Slotted Disc Rotors to front and rear , and Bendics 4x4 brake pads front and rear.
The difference is very noticeable already , and less pedal pressure is required to stop the car than before . I'm towing the boat from Mackay up to Airlie Beach on Friday , so I will let you all know how it really is then . So I will see if I can add theses pics now
I also used chemtec alloy and stainless steel cleaner with a kitchen scourer neat , to clean my black brake dust caked calipers and it worked a treat. They are like new I also took the opportunity to clean the inside of the wheel , as I'm a little bit fussy

Sounds great. Look forward to seeing the pictures. Something I have been thinking of doing in the near future.

What's the benefit of slotted rotors? I have a bit of a squeal coming from one of the wheels, think it might be the brakes. The Kaka has done around 56,000kms but has had the 70K service, no mention of brakes then.

Hi fido666, mine were a bit squeaky too. Stop start city driving gets the brake pads hot and the rotors ( disc) get a nice shiny glaze on them and they start to squeal, but you could have heaps of brake pad left , the dealer would of told you if your pads were getting low I'm sure . The only advantage of slotted rotors is the brake pad runs cooler and doesn't get as hot under hard braking . Once brake pads over heat you get a kind of spongy pedal and you get some smoke coming from brakes once your stopped . That smoke is a gas that gets between your brake pad and rotor . The gas doesn't compress and gives you a spongy pedal and you stopping distance at this stage is greatly reduced. DBA say that there slotted rotor also help pads grip better to the disc , but my jury is still out on that one if you notice performance cars, they have drilled and slotted rotors for that same reason standard EG - V8 commodes, ect . Hope that helps make it clearer for you

Thanks for the explanation Ped, I thought it may have something to do with cooling. Lots of stop start city driving here too but brakes still seem to be working fine, it's scary how responsive they are sometimes.

Slotted rotors are the best compromise, they allow the gases generated when the pad wears to be dispersed without getting trapped and aren't as crack prone as cross drilled rotors. The next step up is a carbon rotor.

My commode uses drilled rotors and six pot calipers

While previous commodes (not mine) made do with slotted rotors

Big rotors both of these, mine are 390mm diameter and the previous model was 380mm.

                    Quad am, nice job.

Best brakes I have seen on a Mitsubishi.

                        Quad.

You have confirmed I must do this. What was the damage in rough dollars?

I brought my rotors and Pad through Bursons . I paid $300 for front pair of rotors , and a little less for rear rotors. Pads were $90 for front 67 for rear. Shop around , I think ebay might be the cheapest really , and if you do lots of mud work there is a T3 slotted rotor , but T2s are cheaper and I don't do that much mud driving . Wife didn't know I changed the brakes, and tonight she commented that the car seem to stop better than it did before ... And my wife drives like Miss Daisy !

I'm about to do the same upgrade on my 120. I was told today by DBA to use the Bendix HD pads rather than Bendix 4WD pads. Apparently the resin Bendix use in the 4WD pads is gumming up the slots and causing vibration.

Minor point, but there is no such thing as a gas that can't be compressed and it is not the primary cause of brake fade.

Do like the slotted discs, do they have cooling fins between the rotors.
