  • Annoying hum in driveline when off throttle

    Hi all,

When I back off the throttle while rolling down hill or slowing down for cars ahead etc there is a whining/humming noise that can be heard from underneath the car. It's somewhere in the driveline I'm sure but can't pick exactly where. As soon as I apply even the slightest pressure on the throttle it instantly goes away. It's only loud enough that with the radio on at a comfortable level it's not heard. Although it's one of those noises that when you notice it you can't tune out.

It's a 2007 GXL, petrol, auto. The auto fluid has never been changed. That will be happening before mid year. It's had all other oils serviced regularly and only travelled 88000klms.

It's noticeable mostly at highway speeds. I also hear it when alone so the wife and kids have been crossed off the list

    Any ideas?

Hey mate.. Found the problem yet? How much off roading do you do? At a first guess I would say it's everything that has flex in it first. So start checking there as it's only happening when not accelerating. But under tension it's fine. when you accelerate Everything kinda moves up a little ..,,Like gear box/ transfer ect... So check bash plates first... could be anything from hitting the front uni/drive shaft to the little wing bit on the side that's very close to the cv joint especially when it takes a little hit like mine did. You'll see the marks if something's rubbing rather than looking for something hard against while stationary, then I'd check everything spinning, starting with uni joints for play Centre bearings for excessive wear ect, then I'd look at the fun stuff... Cv joints. Water in diff ect, but only being noisy under load My money is on the first few things,

Thanks Mullins. I've had oils etc changed and no problem there. I'll have to have another look as what you're saying about everything shifting under load makes sense. I haven't done a lot of 4wding but have certainly done a few tracks that could have put a strain on a few things. It's not a high vibrating/rubbing sound. Just a hum. But it could well be something rubbing.

Before you go too deep into tracking it down i would go simple first and pump some grease (Not too much or it will be thrown everywhere under the rig!) into the front & rear propelling-shaft uni-joints via the grease nipples!

The reason why i think those is because if it was the diff pinion bearing or drive shafts it would be the other way around when the engine is under load!

If it does improve a smidges after greasing then remove the prop-shaft and the culprit uni-joint will be notchy when you pivot it!

NOTE: If you choose to remove the prop-shaft make sure that you clearly mark the "Slip-joint before removing so that you fit it back in the same place or you will make another vibration due to throwing the prop-shaft out of balance if not lined up properly

        Cheers

Thanks for the advice guys. I've had bugger all spare time lately but will check out your ideas hopefully soon. I did have a service done recently which was supposed to include greasing the uni joints and noticed no difference but they may have gone light on the grease. I'll let you know how I go when I get a proper look at it all.

          Cheers.

I also have some strange noises coming from the Prado..
When taking off and getting up to speed it kinda sounds like ... Woooop...wooop ...woop...wop..wop..wop...
No idea what it is. Can feel it through the steering wheel and brake petal slightly. Like a small vibration when the noise is there and loudest under load. Don't think it's the tyres as they make thier own different annoying noise. I'll try grease a few things but don't think it's uni/drive shaft related. I'm thinking gearbox/diff maybe warped brake rotars? Anyone got any ideas on how to check these things? Not really prepared to start pulling doffs ect out if there's an easyer way .....
            Thanks Mullins

I've encountered a similar problem after my last 4x4 trip I now have a very loud driveline whine. I've had the Mechanics look at it and we put it up on the hoist and you can definitely hear it even with the wheels off the ground (i.e. no load). I thought it was the rear diff, but that was pulled out, stripped and nothing wrong.. Tranny bearings all look good, new oil put in but still making the noise. Next step is to pull the rear drive shaft out all together and run it up on the hoist again to isolate, it's either tranny or shaft I think. I will report my findings

It was the diff. A few teeth broken off! We were about to go on a central oz trip when the wife informs me that "that noise is getting worse". After more than 12 months of just being an annoying noise the diff decided to start destroying itself just before we were to leave. My fault I know for not getting it looked at earlier but I hardly get to drive it (wife's shopping trolley) and kind of forgot......
I haven't seen it yet as I picked the car up, packed and left that very day for Dalhousie Springs with another diff installed.
Never leave repairs to the last minute!!!

So I did some investigating today to try and find the problem.
1st, I greased all the nipples in the driveline with some Penrite NLG2 (red) grease - thanks AMTS for pictures of the location of the grease nipples.
2nd, put some air in the cold tyres - 37psi
3rd, took it for a test run and found the following:
                    - no whine under load until 50km/h
                    - whine under no load at all times
                    - whine under part throttle as well over 50km/h
                    - vibration can be felt through steering wheel

The noise and vibration have gotten worse in the last week or so. I did notice when I changed the rear diff oil a couple of weeks ago that a small 3 - 5mm fragment of steel attached to the drain plug magnet.

Now I'm at the stage where I think it could either be cv's or diff. Has anyone got any suggestions as to which direction I should look into next????

                    Thanks
