  • 90 series vs 120 series

Every time i drive my new GX V6 120 series i cant help but compare it with my old RV6. I remember when i first got the 90 series and signed up to this forum and loved reading all about the mighty 90. I even read some biased opinion on the 90 being tougher and better offroad. Of course all us 90 series lovers needed any advantage we could think of to stave off any envy we had of the 120's. Now its the 150 that is the new benchmark and friends of mine with those are coming around to the new one after loving their 120 D4D's. The 120 is a huge step up in power, i just planted my foot for the 1st time to overtake and couldnt believe the V8 like surge. I soon got over that when i looked at the fuel gauge drop. The 120 is smoother, quieter, more comfortable and is way better in sand, but i have much bigger tyres on it than the RV6. I still reach under the number plate holder on the rear door to feel for the handle, which is staring right at me.
I guess the main thing that comes to mind is refinement. There is no doubt Toyota have always made good 4wd's but the earlier Landcruisers and Troopies were similar in comfort to a tractor. They have combined elements of Camry like smoothness with a Landy to come up with the Prado.
Anyone else like to add their 2 bobs worth?

Yep I think the 90 to 120 was a far advancment, 120 to 150 isn't as big of jump. 150 is more techinal but no more refined.

My opinion is my 90 was much more capable off road, far less blinds pots and better off road stats. That said, the 120 is far more refined... seating, dash board etc.
The things I miss are small... no rear air control from the front seats, manual switch for fuel tanks... and the rear locker... but I guess that wasn't standard

My tractor is very comfortable, it has a suspension seat. Sometimes it is hard to get in or out of 4wd but low range is super low. Maximum speed of about 5kph at full throttle. No AC so that can be an issue in summer. No doors either. Just fitted a 4in1 bucket so much better front end protection now. Standard with rear diff lock, cruise control and power steering. Single 12V outlet.

          visibility

I have driven a few tractors and you are right the combination of suspension seat and large rear wheel gives a plush ride, although i think the drive from Sydney to Brisbane would be a little bit more comfortable in a Prado, and a touch quicker. Great visibility though!
There was a mention of visibility in the 120, and i would have to say that it isnt great and the side mirrors are too small. Has this been addressed in the 150?

Having owned both the 90 and the 120, I think they are both great vehicles. If I had my choice again I probably would have stuck with my 90 series as it was petrol and never had to really stress about the motor. Don't get me wrong I love my 120, but the d4d always has me on edge. Never really trust the injectors in them. But on the upside they are getting cheaper to replace.

How is the fuel consumption of the 120 compared to the 90?

My 90 series was on LPG when the rebates were good and it only cost me $300 for installation. I ran it on petrol occasionally and it was ok on the highway for long trips, but the 120 is a bit better. I still would like to convert the 120 to LPG but without rebates and the ridiculous price of LPG at 90c per litre its not worth it. I was reading a thread yesterday on the advances in LNG for smaller engines and it sounded like we might see LNG systems in 3-5 years. It seems that other technologies like electric for bigger 4wd's will not be suitable so LNG or hydrogen might be a possibility. The 120 5 speed auto was officially 13.1 litres per 100 km and i think the petrol 90 was around 14 or 15.

Smally its better in the 120 by about the same quoted by turbo. About a litre or two better all round. I havnt checked mine with the A/t's and lift but I'm thinking some where between 11.4 and 13 L per 100 on the open road. With out mods I was getting 11.4/11.6 pretty much every time I was going away. This is with moderate load, 3 on board, air on and off here and there. Power wise the 120 will leave the 90 easily. They really do hammer if you boot it, but like any petrol you will cop it at the bowser if you drive them like that. Out of my 3 prado's (including the current 120) I would say the 120 is the best. Not sure what people's issues are with the view and side mirrors ?? (not having a go here at any one). But I don't have any major issues with vision. The biggest one would be when i'm reverse parking and how close away I am from the car behind this is where a camera would be great. I find the side mirrors a good size. All up very happy BUT I would prefer the duel aircon but that can wait till I update to a 150 down the track (V6 again) or unless I start to do a lot more towing or touring then it will be a mitsi DID 3.2 unless I go a ute then it WONT be a hilux...Cheers Steve

I had a 96 Prado V6 GXL 90 series ,I now have a 120 series for about 7 years, the 90 wins hands down every time to me. It was just better at everything ,wasn't as quick but I didn't buy either car for speed.

I had a 98 V6 before I bought my 120. Honestly, it was like going from an XE to a BA Falcon. The old Prado was very capable and comfortable, but the 120 does it so much better, is way more comfortable and more efficient.
