I notice the comments about the local mayor owning part of the sand mining company. Anyone know if it's true?

Yes he does, however some of his illegal activities recently caught up with him and he was forced to resign. It was widely publicised on TV here, something about hiding political donations form banned donors. Karma I think.

Stockton is still a nice place to visit, however not nearly as great as it used to be. I think the aboriginal owners have taken the lazy way out and just banned people from large sections as opposed to actually using some of the income it generates to manage it properly. Yes there have been plenty of Dickhead 4WDers there who do the wrong thing like leaving rubbish, and damaging some of the more sensitive areas. But with some actual management it could have been fixed.

Stockton beach is obviously run as a revenue generating business with beach passes, tour operators and several huge sand mines all providing substantial income. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but they should us some of that income to manage it properly to allow greater access to all.
