  • Bicycle rack for 4wding - Gripsport review

I travelled through some of the Victorian high country over January and needed a bike rack that wouldn't get hung up on rocks or other obstacles. My normal bike rack was a big name brand suitable for the city but it didn't cut it for the bush. This got me searching and I ended up testing one from Gripsport and did a review for Go Camping and 4wd Adventures magazine. I am not affiliated with Gripsport and the review is a completely honest account of how the rack performed .... which was great by the way.

This is the link to a pdf of the article: http://www.gripsport.com.au/images/u...ing_review.pdf

Ok, I now drive an FJ Cruiser but did have an 90 series Prado for 11 years and before that, 4Runners from 1985.

I have one of Grip's original racks and it is great. Photos in the 'other' bike rack thread.

Don't have any of those bikes now.

Door opens fine with no bikes on. Had to cut a few mm off to fit the 150.

I have one of these http://www.allensportsusa.com/products/645RR
I haven't taken it seriously off road with bikes on but it copes with ordinary dirt roads ok. I can get the rear door open about 400mm with the rack in the up position and maybe a little more with it folded down. The mounting straps for the bikes can turn allowing odd shaped or kids bikes to be mounted.

The only issue with top mount racks is a lot of bikes don't have straight top tubes (none of mine do) and you need to rely on a temporary tube connected to the stem and seat post. With QR seat posts or dropper seat posts this isn't a good idea which is why I went for a wheel support rack. The Grip racks are very strong. The only thing I have considered is cutting and welding the main hitch beam in a Z to lift the bottom of the rack a bit higher but so far no need. I can also hang this off the back of my trailer. I will get some shots on the 150.
