  • DuelerA/T D697s or BFG A/T KOs

Yep, I'm new and green (This new in fact - http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...e-GXL-Build-Up)
I'm looking to upgrade the tyres in the new year (as mentioned in my build up, the Grandtreks are sometimes a little useless). I think I have it narrowed down to 2 options:

I will aim to get either option in LT.

I'm seeking some opinions/preferences for either of these tyres, or alternatively, a different option.

Note: I've looked into Cooper A/T3s and Goodyear Wrangler AT Adventures, Both also having Pros and Cons.

    Cheers,

I've got the Desert Dueller 694's (older version of the 697's). If I had my time over again I would go the BFG A/T's between the 2 u are looking at. We bought the DD 694's b4 we did our outback trip last year and have done 44000kms in them, rotated every 5>7ks and seeing the condition of them now, I don't reckon I will/would use them on our next trip year..... The best of their usable/effective life is gone I reckon

Jax in Hoppers Crossing gave me this price. They're $300 in Benalla.

I was pointed in the direction of this "Long Term" review of the 697s:

Yes, I know its on a Pajero site, but I think it could still be relevant. - Cliff Notes is after 14,000kms, 1 mm of wear, no noise and they have taken pretty much everything thrown at them.

I picked up a single D697 265/60/R18 LT for $370 recently to match my spare with the other 4 tyres. I haven't had the D697s on long enough to know how they will go long term but I was happy with the D694s on the 95 series. I did notice the D694s were made in Japan and the D697s in Indonesia and to the eye the D697s look to have a softer compound.

I think Bridgestone have attempted to make these slightly better for on road driving - perhaps the reason for the softer compound??

Another option, the Maxxis AT-980. They are available in a 265/65/17 or a 275/65/17 and, going off the website, seem to be LT's (load rating). The tread pattern is similar to the BFG's.

I have Maxxis AT-771's on my Pajero and i reckon they are a great tyre. They have plenty of on road grip, wet of dry, and do very well off road. They are quiet and are wearing very well, reckon I'll get around 70k km's out of them (if for some reason I still have the Paj at that point). They are a better tyre than the Bridgestone D694's they replaced.
Wish List: Late 120 series or 150 series V6 preferably manual, the funds to buy said vehicle

Current ride: MY2002 Mits. Pajero V6 manual With a couple of bits and pieces

The AT-980 is more aggressive than the 771 from the looks of things?
I should probably clarify that I'm after a tyre that's good for 60-70% on road use and 30-40% off road, so I don't want something too aggressive.
I cant seem to find the 771s on any dealer website, or on the Maxxis website - is there a reason for this??

On a side note, I run Maxxis tyres on my mountain bike, and have never really had an issue...

The 980 is listed as a 60/40 tyre, so will fit the bill there. You will possibly find they arent really any more aggressive than the BFG, if they are there wouldnt be much in it. The 771 is sold purely through Bob Jane stores. They are the importer of the tyre, not Maxxis Australia, so they dont show up on the Maxxis website

That'd Explain it. Might do some further research. Find a price for the AT-980s.

I just checked with Tyrepower Werribee, and Nope, no LT construction. They do however have a higher load rating than standard passenger construction. They were priced at $285 a corner.

I shall keep these in mind, especially given their reasonable price!

Try Don Cornell in Sydney for BFGs. They do grey stock. Service was ok up until they took my money and then everything went like clockwork. You will just have to find a tyre place to fit the tyres you bring in.

The Engineer in me decided a clever spread-sheet would help with a decision. (*insert people's yawns here*)
Each Item is scored as s fraction of the best option (eg, [price of that tyre]/[cheapest tyre price].

Currently, the Duelers are winning...just...over the Coopers.
