      New Toy

Nothing too spectacular, but I did pick up a 3SIXT little camera thingy to record all the fun moments while out bush. $40 from BigW, I couldn't complain. Unfortunately it didn't come with a suction mount for the windscreen but the handle bar mount works nicely on the rear view mirror.

The video quality is quite good - I'll upload a short video later - and I think this could make for some better story telling post adventure time!!

A little disappointed that I didn't get down to the Explore Australia Expo, Facebook made me jealous. I did make up for it slightly by getting the Prado a little dirty in the Strathbogie ranges.

        UHF Mic. Extension

This last weekend brought about a new modification for the Prado.
Having my UHF radio installed in the centre console meant that to use the mic., I had to pass it through between the lid and the console. This is no longer the case. I recently purchased an RJ45 through connector, and using a Cat 5e cable I had lying around, managed to install a mic. connection point near the Aux./USB plugs.

First step was to remove the blank that I wanted to use, I pulled the trim apart as per my UHF Antenna install (http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post467768)

I had a spare blank from where my Lightforce light switch used to be. I modified this to accept my through connector, and glued it in. (http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post465932)

Next, I needed to drill a new hole in the Centre console to pass the Cat 5e cable through. This proved difficult as my drill does not fit in the console. Completing this, I passed the cable through.

I have a little clean up work to complete in the console yet.
I looped the excess cable and tucked it in next to the shift mechanism. The location is shown in the next photo, however at the time of taking, the cable was not looped.

This is the final result, I have a bit of touch up work to do as the Loctite dries white-ish, which looks a little odd. Need to acquire some touch up paint or something.

EDIT: Touched up the white with a little black paint (All I had was Pot Belly Black, but that has done the trick) Looks almost like it is supposed to be there

In all, the install took about 30-45 minutes and on a scale of 1-10 (10 being really hard), this was a 3.

          LED Parker/Blinker Replacement

I picked up my LED Parker/Blinker replacement from Shepparton 4 Wheel Drive Centre today, after ARB sent them out free of charge. I had queried them about the parker blowing a couple of times, and they sent out the new LED style.

I installed them this afternoon - during the first period of sun we've had in ages.

The first job was to remove the left and right guard under the bull bar. This is just a hand full of bolts on the bull bar, 2 screws on the wheel arch and a bolt on the chassis (or thereish)

The Kit came with 2 sets of lights and the wiring harness for each, plus all the screws/washes/nuts etc. required.

Once the guards were off, 2 screws holding the old lights in place needed to be removed. They are a little awkward to reach while laying on your driveway, but nevertheless I got them off.
The light comes away easily once these screws are out.

          This is the removed light:

From here, I followed the instructions provided by ARB to install the new lights, however, instead of using the provided electro-taps, I used some crimp on connectors to join the old wiring harness to the new.
The following photo shows the new light installed and the connection between the old and new harness (the taped section)

This isnt my final configuration as the cables seemed a little unsupported, so I re-routed them and secured them with the provided cable ties.

After installing both sets (the second was much easier than the first) I re-installed the guards. (not before a final test of course)

          The final result:

This task took probably an hour and a bit, and would be a difficulty of 3 out of 10.
Another Big thanks to ARB is required here!!

A nice New, Colourful PP sticker.

Oh, and I removed the spare wheel cover - there was more dust in behind there than on all the roads in Aus!!
Just need to acquire myself an all terrain spare tyre - if anyone has a 265/65R17 all terrain tyre that's destined for the retirement home (preferably with a little bit of tread left) - feel free to donate it to my cause!!

                      re UHF Mic Extension,

Mine came with the extension as part of the radio and I installed in the same location. Very happy as driver or passenger could use at any time. Pity about the cut in the console under the lid for the UHF mic cable! guess you never see it anyway and you can put the mic away out of sight.

Love the vision from the Big W camera, what a corker. Even in the rain, clear as a bell. Insurance company would not argue with that footage if the worst happened.

                      cheers

You never know when it may come in handy though, I can plug items into the 12v or USB or AUX and hide them in the console.

I'm looking forward to using the camera out bush somewhere, capturing the more "bottom clenching" moments for everyone to see.

On a completely unrelated note, I got home after 4 and a half hours on the road yesterday and there was a parcel next to my front door.
                          In it was this:

I sent a photo to ARB for a competition, and if you look on the last page (Inside Back Cover) of ARB 4X4 Action Magazine, you can see the Prado climbing Billy Goats. The Tyre repair kit was a prize for having a photo in the Magazine.

Something new that I have learned:
Rotating your tyres without a) a hoist, b) stands and/or c) a trolley jack is a pain in the back/legs/arms etc.
I was forced to take the spare off the back and work my way through all four wheels. Next time, things will be different.

What is surprising is, the Prado had a wheel alignment and the 50k service, and the wheels were not rotated during either. This seemed a little strange, or is it just me assuming they'd get done in the service?

If serviced at the dealer it should of been done, it is actually listed in the log book to do it. Most mechanical workshops won't do it though unless you request it.

My dealer's excuse when it wasn't done despite having been specifically requested was "Oh, we didn't think it needed it as all the tyres have the same amount of tread". It was also a listed service item for that particular service so I made a fuss. They did it for me then sent me off to an outside tyre shop for a free wheel alignment.
