You would have seen my Fiskar in action several times, I have the smaller one and am looking at getting the larger one to make the splitting a little easier. I have used it numerous times to clear smaller trees (up to 30cm in diameter).

See ya on the tracks, Richo.

A splitter is good for splitting length ways but if you've ever tried to cop through a decent log across ways, the chopper is way better (and safer) than the splitter. If you're taking a chainsaw, I'd agree with the splitter being a good option. If you need a single tool for both though, you definitely want the chopper.

I have been cutting and splitting wood for way too long, apart from camping wood heating as well. Best combination (imo) is chain saw and splitter. The Fiskars splitter is excellent. If you hold the splitter up near the head it is pretty easy to split up some kindling also.

The first few days we only had an axe and slitter and didn't use the axe as anything too large was too much work with an axe anyway.

If there was no chainsaw the splitter would have been more than suffice to look after anything you could carry back to the camp fire.

Splitter was not mine (don't remember the brand) but I believe you can get them from Anaconda or any good camping store and it worked very well and well made. I will purchase a splitter before our next camping trip.

Fiskar, yes that was the brand I used and It was excellent. Only complaint it was a bit small for me (owned by a lady hence the size).

For me the sharper the better, that way you don't need as much effort so safer. Ask a butcher he will always have a sharp knife, never a blunt one.

Went looking for info on Getting my axe sharpened, found this thread.

I have an Estwing long handle camping axe, bought it 15 years ago,
nice and light for when hiking, and now it fits perfectly in my rear draws.

Anyone recommend a good place to get an axe or knife sharpened in Perth?

I used to do it myself on grandads sharpening wheel, but really don't have the time anymore.

I want to re sharpen it properly but won't have time before Easter weekend, so went and ordered a new one on eBay

                    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ESTWING-E...item33914990ca

At least I'll have one for the weekend, and then I can work on my old one.

Estwing over fiskars? I like the full metal handle but does it really stop the vibrations? I have never seen these east wing ones before but I'm intrigued.

I don't have first hand experience with their axes, but if they are half as good as their hammers they will be first class.
