  • Bushbasher's 2009 GXL D4D

Well, it's about time I got to this rig build up. It all started back in late 2008 when I started looking to replace my original Prado - a 1998 V6 petrol 5 spped which I had owned from new and only had 150,000 on the clock. It had a combination of OME and Toughdog suspension with 2 inch lift, dual batteries, Uniden dual band CB, Airtec snorkel, factory alloy bar, BFGs and Hella 4000 spots.

Dealers wanted to only give me $10 grand, less a thousand for cleaning, as a trade in on a $60k new Prado.

After looking at up-spec GX models I decided I didn't want white. So a GXL it had to be. I wanted a Dune coloured Prado and decided to go for the diesel with auto. Ordered in November 08 and delivered mid January 09. BFGs, tint and HR towbar fitted by dealer at my request. Within 3 months I fitted ARB deluxe bar and Kings/Bilstien 50mm lift in time for a camping trip out back of Wiluna. Hella 4000s and Uniden dual band CB taken off old Prado which my son was now driving.

Weathershields, bonnet protector and rear wind deflector also fitted by me soon after purchase.

Next upgrade was the all important second battery utilizing a Chargemaster monitor and solenoid from Opposite Lock. Along with this mod I ran two cables to the rear to run the two engels plus a 3rd cable for a anderson plug at the tow bar.

The solenoid was located using a simple bracket up in the back left corner behind the fuel filter.

Early on just after purchase I knocked up the rear spare tyre spacer after I discovered the tyre fitters had jammed the big BFG on using some dodgy bolts.

The Airtec snorkel was another must do mod and the missus wasn't too keen on me attacking another near Prado with a hole-saw. I told her to relax as I was an expert now having already done one. Rhino HD bars also went on to carry some recovery gear.

The quad breather kit went in and has proved it's worth with some reasonably deep water crossings over the years.

The old dual band Uniden CB was bolted to the side of the centre console. After the 80 channel units were released I upgraded to a Uniden 7760 with remote handset. The unit was concealed under the centre console and the handset holder is screwed into the ashtray.

A visit to the annual Perth 4WD and camping show resulted in a couple of purchases namely Bushranger 9500lb winch, Dyneema rope and Brown Davis under body protection plate. 1000 amp isolator located under bonnet near battery cuts power to winch solenoids when not in use.

Courtesy of a for sale advert on PP I scored a complete set of Outback roller drawers with built in fridge slide and cargo barrier. Best of all they are colour coded to match my interior. After a little hassle freighting this from Sydney it was reasonably straight forward fitting it all in. The unused rear seats and carpet are safely stored away wrapped in plastic. The drawers are great for holding recovery gear and tools, etc.

Rocktamer stone guards help keep some of the rocks from smashing against the back of the car. I do supplement these with some core-flite plastic stuck to the back windows. After about 5 years the rubber flaps are now starting to crack and split so these will be replaced with some fresh rubber before the next outing with the camper trailer.

Following the dreaded engine blow up in July 2012 I fitted the Racor 230R fuel filter as recommended by the 'roo. I custom made a bracket that holds it just behind the factory filter. Also fitted was the Provent oil separator. Another home made bracket secures this to the gearbox under the left side below the floor.

                        The separator.

The bracket for the oil separator.

The stainless step downs to match the hose diameters.

                        Provent in place.

The late model Hilux bonnet scoop. Possibly the first new one fitted to a Prado, at least on PP anyway. Cutting a hole in the bonnet was more nerve racking than doing the snorkel hole. All done by me except the paint. Just in time for the SA GTG.

At the SA GTG in 2012 I fitted a set of AJ's steel side steps which I had ordered and paid for just prior to the trip so the first or second night was spent fitting the new steps. They were scratched in a couple of days but did their job perfectly. Big thanks to AJ and his welding skills. I sold the original steps on return to WA.

This year we headed through the centre off the beaten track and up to Darwin and then across the top of WA so what better excuse did I need to fit a new roof rack. The Tracklander came with a ladder plus bonus spare tyre bracket, awning brackets and twin jerry can holder.

Sand flag attached by using Rhino plate mount to underside of Tracklander roof rack.
