  • Adding cruise control

    Hi
Have just purchased a 2007 GX D4D 6sp manual and was surprised that cruise control was not included in the base model. I was wondering if I could buy the bits from a wreckers or is there an aftermarket kit than anyone knows of at a reasonable price . Is the kit different for a manual? Any Ideas would be appreciated.

Mine came with an after market cruise control ('06 GX) I would think that it should be straight forward. Mine is module that is mounted to the side of the steering wheel. The only difference between an auto an manual is there needs to be a switch on the clutch pedal as well as the brake pedal.

I don't know of installers in Perth, but I am sure that Perth members can be of assistance.

Yeah im sure it can be done. I had an 04 diesel that had an aftermarket kit. I was thinking though with the 07 that it would be all electronic stuff may be a bit different. Cheers..

Have a look over on the new hilux forums. Many of them didn't come standard with cruise, even the later models, so lots fit aftermarket kits.

From memory there are two main competitors, but it certainly wasn't as simple as buying the factory bits and plugging it in (with a hilux anyway).

I fitted a factory cruise kit to the Rodeo. Same principle though. Plug and play for the most part. Two modules to connect up with pre made looms. Had to put some LEDs in the instrument cluster and put a few extra wires in various connectors and drill the odd hole here and there. Aftermarket kits would be much the same, I just happened to know someone at a Holden dealer who went through the stock lists and found a different dealer who had been sitting on the factory kit for 5 years so I managed to negotiate a good price. Very easy install. Took me about 5 hours. Fly by wire system as well on a manual.

Cruise is already in the ecu ... Realistically you should only need a cruise switch, the slip ring behind the steering wheel , all the wiring I'd say would be in situ ...

If buying aftermarket, I've fitted many cruise controls to vehicles over the years and the ones that give me the least problems on diesels is Command.

Might be worth checking to see if cruise was only fitted to vehicles with ABS. If it is then it will probably pick its speed signal from the ABS wheel speed sensors. In that case an aftermarket one will be the go.

                      DIY cruise control prado 120

No OME is the way to go. Just complete the conversion today. I based it on the toyotanation tocuma forum but have had to modify along the way. It is that easy it hurts. I'll post the photos I've taken. First you need to order the stalk/switch about $50 eBay.
                      http://www.pradopoint.com/attachment...3&d=1385524895

Remove the two panels either side of steering wheel and undo the hex bolts to remove the airbag assembly (I didn't unplug or disconnect it but be gentle)
                      http://www.pradopoint.com/attachment...8&d=1385525714

They are a universal fit but the plug can be different.
                      http://www.pradopoint.com/attachment...4&d=1385524949

I was able to remove the electric contact pins (using a pin and screw driver) and place them in my original plug.

Steering column wires mirror steering wheel plug and provide a guide as to colour - red goes to blue/black (positive)

Connect it up and the cruise light comes on the dash.

I have a manual so I need a clutch switch which I have ordered. It will attach and replace this bolt
                      http://www.pradopoint.com/attachment...9&d=1385525774

To see if it was working I found the clutch switch high in the dash and bridge the plug with wire. What do you know it works.

45186-0C020-B1 Steering wheel cover (order based on your steering wheel cover color)
88280-14030 Clutch switch (only needed if you have a manual transmission)
84633-04020 Cruise control wire (this is what connects the stalk to the steering wheel spinal)
90080-15079 1/2" 10/32 screws (you could save some money and get these at a hardware store)..

                          and the finished result.

Really you don't need to purchase the switch wire which would save you $26 if you can put the pins from the new wire in the original plug as I did.

No need to add the brake switch, the original one already tells the ECU to cancel the cruise. Until the clutch switch arrives just don't change gears or the old girl revs her head off!

                          Hope this helps
